so, i am currently experiencing a lot of ennui about all of my fencing and stuff. everyone around me keeps telling me how amazing of an opportunity i have, and how great it is that i get to travel and stuff... but, idk. i just dont feel like i have the drive for it. and i kinda feel like i am lying to everyone. then i feel like a shit, because i have the opportunity to go to the paralympics in 2016, but i genuinely cannot get up the muster to care at all. BLAHH. (i needed a vent, sorry)
No no no, come vent to me, I completely understand.
A few years back, I was super into writing. I wrote every single day. I had at least three completed novels and a few WIPs, frankly everything under constant rewrite. I had a few poems published, I have had short stories here and there. In my undergrad, upper-end creative writing course, my critique group was (by the teacher's own honesty), the best writers in the class (bar one). Myself and one other girl were the only ones who were good enough to potentially be published right then.
I went to a writer's conference two years ago, learned a lot, presented a couple ideas I had, and was asked for submittals from three different agents. I am a good, talented writer, and I have a lot of opportunities ahead of me thanks to it.
Last year, I spent a lot of time and heart writing a fic that almost no one read. And it got me down, and it messed me up, and I stopped writing. I haven't been able to pick writing back up.
It's not really a loss of confidence. I still know I'm a good writer. I have reviewed some of my existing stuff, including the fic that no one read, and I know I have talent and I could really get somewhere. People keep bugging me to start writing again, to get them more of my ongoing stuff.
But the thing is, I don't care all that much anymore. And I feel guilty. And a little messed up about it. Do I not care because I haven't done it constantly? Do I not care because it's not a challenge anymore? Is my ennui really a disguise for a deep-seated lack of confidence and fear of failure that I'm not really dealing with?
Or is it okay to not care, because I've found other things I'm really interested in? In the time of me not writing, I have sewn a hell of a lot more, both clothing and plushies. I have become more involved and professional at work. I have picked up a couple other hobbies.
Writing was probably the only thing I was absolutely amazing at (I'm fairly good at a lot of things, but not amazing at really anything; I'm okay with this). Is it a bad thing that I've stopped? Or is it okay because I've moved on to other things?
Basically this long rambling rant is to say I definitely understand where you're going. And these questions of "Do I not care because there's an underlying problem I'm not dealing with? Am I terrible for not caring because I have something other people are envious about, and I don't want it? Or is it okay to move on? Am I chained to this thing I am good at?"
I don't have the answers. But I do have an ear if you ever want to talk.
