The asphalt was warm against her back, and she would have been content to just keep sleeping in the warm sunlight had the sun not been shining directly on her eyes.

A loud groan was her only protest as she flung her arm over her eyes. Scratchy material made her scrunch up her nose as she fully gave in to consciousness. Opening her eyes, the grey material of her clothing was the first thing she noticed. The second thing she noticed was the silence. Slowly lowering her arm, she pushed herself into a seated position and observed her surroundings with wide eyes and parted lips. For all she could see, down alleys, streets, and inside buildings, there was absolutely no one.

“ Hello! ” Her voice sounded scratchy and she was overcome with intense thirst as her body began to remind her that she hadn’t ate or drank in-

The silence became the least of her worries as she suddenly realized she had absolutely no idea about who she was, what she had been doing, and where she was at that very moment. Suddenly the fact that she was completely alone, on what she knew should be a busy street, was absolutely terrifying. A loud growling from her stomach startled her, and she glared down her gray covered torso.

“ Well fuck. ” She pushed herself onto her knees and then her feet and then wobbled as she tried to stay standing. The issue of No People would have to wait, she would have to focus on herself first. She always did work better on a full stomach, though she was unable to remember how she knew that. A couple wobbly steps got her a few feet further and she squinted up at the street sign, hoping it would give her an idea of where she was.

“ Oscar Drive. ” She trailed off, cocking her head to the side. “ Huh. ”

A glance to her left revealed a convenience store and she grinned. Bingo.

Everything else could wait until she had something to eat and drink.

                             The Awakening || TASK 001

               Amber irises revealed themselves from behind thick eyelashes and weighted lids, fluttering into the late afternoon sunlight as they narrowed in on sparkling fragments of dust lingering in the orange glow. Hazy. Memory escaped her grasp, like sand slipping between lithe fingers until it all but dissipated into nothing. She was trying to catch smoke, trying to gather a wisp of recollection into her palms only to be left with one defining piece of knowledge: her body was lying in a hospital bed.

                 A hospital bed. Machinery did not tick by around her to signal life, no nurses on call to receive whatever cry might escape parted lips. Not that one ever would, somehow without the memory attached, she knew that her mind had been conditioned against vocalizing pain. Utter silence. How much time had ticked by as she laid statuesque in this strange world? This bizarre, incomprehensible, unfamiliar world...

                “Who are you?” Her voice finally rasped to the ceiling above, head a blank slate of absolute nothingness as she came up empty. What was her name? How had she gotten here? Was she alone? Could she move? A wiggle of her toes let the woman know that yes, her limbs still functioned and within moments her unsteady frame was perched at the edge of the mattress. Frigid. The bare soles of her feet brushed against the icy surface of linoleum floors before determination riddled itself through the marrow of her bones, forcing her figure to take a step. 

         Then another. One more. And again, and again, and again.

                   Each movement a careful traipse until the brunette was walking at a leisurely pace from the room and into a hallway void of the living. The scene existed as though the remainder of humanity had been plucked from their stations in a rapture, leaving a nameless face alone in the wake of isolation. Nimble fingers reached forward to trace along the silhouette of her reflection in a glass door, LIMA embroidered upon the front of her jumpsuit. The fabric in question hung from her slender frame like an oversized coat, one she felt a necessity to shed if only to create distance from its foreign nature.

                    As thumb and forefinger clasped at her zipper with every intention of stripping the offending cloth from her skin, a faint echo of metal crashing onto the tile resounded from an adjoining wing. A trick of the wind or the prospect of another lost soul? Anticipation. Not aggressive enough to run straightforward into the throes of whatever existed around the corner, nor meek enough to return to the sanctuary of a room she did not remember, the woman without a title stood complacent in the expansive corridor. 

                  One hand wormed around the cylindrical tube of a needle lying discarded on a gurney, stealthily concealing the object behind her back as she awaited what revelation might come.

          She was ready.

in all reality, it felt like he’d had a good nap.

the first thing he saw when he opened his eyes was an arched ceiling with different spots of colored lights. it was a minute of pure bliss and peace as he laid on a cold ground on his back, looking up at the strange patterns on the ceiling. it was quiet, no sounds but those of his shallow breathing, but it felt familiar. the peace after waking up only lasts so long, though, as he realized something was wrong. he didn’t know anything. he kept his eyes on the pattern as he reached to remember something, anything about the past few days or even of himself.

he didn’t know how he’d ended up here, he didn’t even remember falling asleep. the last thing he remembered... was waking up. he sat up slowly, using his hands to prop him up as he searched around with his eyes. they were starting to feel tired now, as they hungrily took in his surroundings. he couldn’t even explain what he felt like, his feelings were a mixture of fear, worry and confusion. he felt like he was on his toes as he recognized his surroundings. 

the wooden pews and the stained glass windows could only mean one thing - he was home. or was he? he knew that this was a familiar surrounding, and that this was a place he was often at but it wasn’t really home. churches weren’t homes.

his mind felt empty. he felt empty as he struggled to remember anything. he had a feeling about being in churches often, but he didn’t know anything about himself. what was his name? where did he come from? where was he? was he home, was he away? the most important question lodged itself in his mind: what had happened? he moved his legs, standing up and realizing that (thankfully) he was clothed. a gray jumpsuit with the word: hotel. was that him, or did he get wasted and steal a hotel uniform?

he walked towards the exit of the church, opening the big, wooden doors expecting to find people walking down the street or a priest or somebody at all. instead, he opened the doors to find an empty town. literally. there was nobody there. not a single, living soul. or at least not that he could see, or hear. it was eerie, how motionless and silent the town was. he retreated back inside the church, maybe there was an answer in there that could help him understand what the hell was happening.
