FISH GUTS is out NOW! featuring very special mini comics written by Hello Magnolia and illustrated by Tyler Pinneo
Every time I see someone label Good Omens as queerbaiting I want to yank the show out of their grubby, unappreciative hands.
Aces. Aren't. Queerbaiting.
By all means, enjoy the openly gay relationships in OFMD. I'm enjoying them, too. But just because stories are different, that doesn't make one right and one wrong.
Both of these are a kind of love:
Confession: while I hard-relate to Crowley in a lot of ways, I also see a lot of myself in Aziraphale. And the way that some writers capture how much Crowley loves him... In his softness and fussiness and anxiety and bookishness and set-in ways... It gives me some kind of hope that maybe someone could love me like that. Adore me in all my ordinary ways, as well as my quirks.
I guess this is both a thank you to the fandom as well as a little wish into the universe.
Cool. Now, because I write Aziraphale and Crowley as ace characters (which they are in the book!), I'm pushing a puritanical christian approach to sex. No, I'm not going to link to the post I saw and no I'm not naming names. Just, wow, thanks for trodding on the ace community.
I write them as demi because that's how I experience the world. I write them as demi because I figure it might not have even occurred to them that humans were an option (and, honestly, would they have wanted their fellow angels/demons?). I write them as demi because they grew in love over thousands of years and, damn, I feel that.
I've been out of the church for over a decade and I will not be lumped back in it because of my sexuality.
My relationship with the Good Omens fandom is probably the most interesting that I've had yet. (I came here from Doctor Who. Before that was various Star Trek series. Before that was The X-Files.)
I have this side-blog here, dedicated to shipping Aziraphale and Crowley. I've written over 100,000 words worth of fic for them in the last year.
And yet... If I see a whiff of the idea that the only way to interpret them is romantic/sexual I instantly grow pointy teeth and claws.
Ship and let ship. Headcanon whatever you like. But, whatever interpretation you affix to a character is just that: yours.
My thanks to @ack-emma and @kristayy21 for your kind words last night. I can't seem to tag you, so I hope you see this.
And, @onthedriftinthetardis for, for the millionth time perhaps, talking me down from some kinda mental ledge.
I think I'm going to take this one post at a time and keep within the spirit of this little, soft nest. (And avoid facebook commentary like the plague.)
I very nearly did not join the Good Omens fandom at all because of ace discourse and I think the new season dropping (among other things in my personal life, poor timing all around) took me back there and caused a bit of a freakout.
I read and write and enjoy so much GO fanwork, but it isn't all necessarily what I want to see in the actual show. I know that's not how everyone in the fandom works. But I do trust what Neil Gaiman has done thus far and I would like to see what his vision is for this, too.
This blog may experience a bit of a hiatus. Which is not to say I'm shutting it down or anything. I've been struggling to keep the queue here full as it is and... I don't cope well with the hype, anticipation, and speculation that comes with new season news. It runs my anxiety right up a mental tree (admittedly, many things do that).
I am happy for a second season. I will watch the second season. I can't imagine not loving it with everyone who's involved.
Just, this isn't my favorite part of fandom life and I have enough things pressing on my mental health that I can't push back on this one right now.
