An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
After a long hiatus, I'm back swimming in SV waters. Time to finally publish the Tulsa fic on AO3. Chapter 1 is up now! ***
“I just need a fucking break. I need...I think I need to get out of California.” Richard pulls himself up into a sitting position, his knees tucked under his chin. He can hear his mother’s voice in his ear and his stomach flips. Resting his forehead on his knees, he heaves a deep sigh and says, “Will you book a couple of tickets to Tulsa for the weekend?”
“I’d...be happy to, Richard. And you,” Jared clears his throat, “you ah, want two tickets for...?”
Richard looks up, perplexed. “You and me. That’s, I mean, you’ll come with me, right?”
Jared blinks, and his eyes and his smile become watery, but he holds himself together remarkably well. “Of course, Richard.”
Any advice for someone who found SV too late to actually participate in fandom? It's lonely out here...
Hi friend. It is so lonely not having people to share the thing you're into with - I'm sorry you're dealing with that! I haven't been too engaged with SV for a while but I think there is still some kind of fandom out there or at least a couple of semi-active discords? (Anyone have a link? Please comment!) Other than that, and acknowledging this is easier said than done, my advice would be to reach out to people however you can. Leave comments on stuff. A well-timed comment has often inspired me to revisit a fic I thought I'd never touch again; you could be that source of inspiration! Ask questions - in my experience, most people want to share but are waiting to be asked. Try not to let other people's level of interest stop you from creating the content you wanna see in the world (this one is definitely easier said than done). Also you can of course and always send me your Jared Thoughts.
love, jcn
I was tagged by the lovely @joycecarolnotes to participate in this fanfic writer meme
1) how many works do you have on ao3?
25. And my first fic posted was from 2015, so it’s not a lot in the grand scheme of things. I’m amazed at people who can crank out a lot
2) what is your total ao3 word count?
167,347
3) how many fandoms have you written for, and what are they?
3. Silicon Valley, Harry Potter, and I have one lone Star Wars fic
4) what are your top 5 fics by Kudos.
Surprise for Diner
The Maybe Non-Eventful Life of Percy Weasley
Tea Time
More Than Words Can Say
Come to Bed
They are all Harry Potter because even a Harry Potter rare pair can get more Kudos than a Silicon Valley fic (and I don’t think I was like anywhere near the most popular Jarrich writers)
5) do you respond to comments?
I usually try to, even if it’s just a thank you. I’ve fallen a bit behind though.
6) what's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending
I don’t really write much angst, so it’s probably the SV fic “Ashes to Ashes”, but it was more of a sad fic than anything else because of character death.
7) What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending
Um, almost all of them have happy endings. Maybe “A Trip to Disney” or “Tea Time”?
8) do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you've ever written
Nope, I do not. The closest I got was “Tea Time” which used Harry Potter AND The Cursed Child characters. Ooohhh
9) have you ever received hate on a fic?
I don’t think I have. I stay in my lane and either pick pairings from shows that are not popular and it was the one of the main fandom ship, so no one cared or a fairly rare pair from a huge fandom, so no one cares
10) Do you write smut? What kind?
I have dabbled in light smut for like four fics, most of it isn’t very descriptive
11)have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I’m aware of
12) have you ever had a fic translated?
No, I haven’t, but if anyone wants to, please ask! I’d be honored!
13) have you ever co-written a fic before.
Nope. Considering my writing is very sporadic, it probably wouldn’t work
14) whats your favourite ship?
I love writing Perciver even if Joanne is terrible. Reading-wise, I get in moods where I will obsessively read different fandoms so it changes all the time. I do love a sunny one/grumpy one dynamic.
15) whats a WIP that you want to finish but don't think you ever will?
I don’t typically write long stories, so the only WIP that I have published is The Maybe Non-Eventful Life of Percy Weasley, which I plan to finish. I’ve just had a very rough late-2020 and general 2021 and this chapter is the most difficult to write. I do want to finish it though
I have a lot of WIPs just languishing on my computer, some of fandoms I’ve never written for, that I don’t know if they’ll ever see the light of the internet. For example, I have the start of a GOT Gendrya fic in my Google Drive where they’re working on a movie and Arya is a stunt woman and Gendry is like the props weapons master. I actually have a lot of shit like this where I don’t remember where I was going, why it’s there, etc.
16) What are your writing strengths.
The three “F”s: Funny, Fluffy, and Family dynamics
17) what are your writing weaknesses?
Planning things out, confidence, matching my thoughts into words, writer’s block.
18) what are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in fic?
I generally try to avoid because I am terrible at learning languages and I don’t want to offend anyone. I also generally avoid writing in dialect for similar reasons.
19) what was the first fandom you wrote for.
God, when I was like young teenager/pre-teen, I’m pretty sure I wrote Avatar the Last Airbender fic. It’s probably on fanfiction.net and I don’t remember what my own username was.
20) what's your favourite fic you've ever written?
God, I don’t know. I’m proud of the response I’ve gotten on The Maybe Non-Eventual Life of Percy Weasley so far. And that I’ve written something that long. I’m gobsmacked on how popular Surprise for Dinner is and the response I still get on it. I really do love More Than Words Can Say and Tea Time for their emotional depths. For my SV stuff, Sibling Pep Talks is probably my favorite.
I don’t know who to tag.
one of richard hendricks' sexiest traits is how consistently unfazed and unimpressed he is by gilfoyle
open question for any sv fans: who from the cast do you feel like you would vibe with the most? if you met them outside of a context where they were famous, like they were just someone you knew through friends or work? and i mean the actors here, not their characters.
bonus round: do you feel like you would vibe with their character the same way? or is it totally different?
bonus bonus round: who would you vibe with the least?
