I had finally began my to write about my thesis.
The main interested and area of my thesis that I always wanted to explore and focused on are SUPPORTING & SAFETY. I am interested in these areas because I enjoy observed/finding problems and solving/redesign the needs for better solutions. I have been researching ,reading , and experiencing/for my these.
My thesis is providing better engagement and safety solution to solve the needs for Bike riders. A smart connected wireless biking system that has build in individual parts of the bicycle for safety protection and prevent unnecessary accident for bicycle riders.
How I started this project? and why?
3 years ago, I went bike traveling with my father and his bike club members for 7 days. It was a great experience but difficult. Bike traveling could be really danger specially as a group. There can be lacks of awareness for bikers and others. ( Turning signal lights, break lights, and personal traveling tracking (distance, heard beats, tire level, etc…)) So I started to have conversation with other cyclists of my thoughts. Many of them have similar experience and wish to have better supports for it.
What can bicycle do more than just a transpiration?
What experience and quality are missing and needed during their bike riding?
What are the challenging during the bike ride (urban city V.S outdoor long traveling)? What do they wish for?
According to The Royal Society:
Every year in this country around 19,000 cyclists are killed or injured in reported road accidents, including around 3,000 who are killed or seriously injured.
Cyclist casualties have risen in recent years as the amount of cycling has increased.
- Around 75% of fatal or serious cyclist accidents occur in urban areas
- Around half of cyclist fatalities occur on rural roads
- 75% happen at, or near, a road junction
- 80% of cyclist casualties are male
- Almost one quarter of the cyclists killed or injured are children
- Around three quarters of cyclists killed have major head injuries.
COMMON CYCLING ACCIDENTS:
Motorist emerging into path of cyclist
Motorist turning across path of cyclist
Cyclist riding into the path of a motor vehicle, often riding off a pavement
Cyclist and motorist going straight ahead
Cyclist turning right from a major road and from a minor road
Child cyclist playing or riding too fas
Nearly all bicyclist fatalities (92%) occurred as a result of crashes with motor vehicles.
• Although they make up only 5–17% of vehicles on NYC roadways, large vehicles (trucks, buses) accounted for almost one third (32%) of fatalities.
• Nearly all (94%) fatalities involved poor driving or bicycle riding practices, particularly driver inattention and disregarding traffic signals and signs.
• Although there are many more miles of local roads, more than half of fatal crashes occurred on arterial (large, four lane) roads (53%).
I want to learn, explore, design and create a better safety solution that meets security, safety and importantly convenience needs for cyclist. To also dive deeper and explore more how can bicycle be more engaged to the cyclist. (What can bicycle do more than just a transpiration for the cyclist? What experience and quality is missing and needed during their bike riding.)
