Svante Arrhenius (1859-1927), already in in 1896, Swedish scientist was the first to use principles of physical chemistry to estimate the extent to which increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide are responsible for the Earth's increasing surface temperature. In the 1960s, Charles David Keeling demonstrated that the quantity of human-caused carbon dioxide emissions into the air is enough to cause global warming.
P.S. Actually at least 125 years ago, scientists had understanding about carbon dioxide emissions and greenhouse effect on Earth. As well we know that “big oil”, fossil fuel industry at least last 60 years deliberately spread lies and made attempts to slow down development of carbon “free” energy technologies and businesses...

For almost half a century, science has been able to calculate the consequences of human climate destruction—there are books that tell the story of when which environmental and climate changes were first predicted.
A pioneer in this field was the Swedish chemist Svante Arrhenius: He already determined in 1896 that the burning of fossil fuels could lead to global warming. It’s maddening, yes: The first indication of the developments that we are experiencing today is already 120 years old! In 1969 a distant descendant of Svante Arrhenius was born. His parents decided to name their child after the chemist in the family who once recognized the connection between emissions and global warming. That seems to have been a broad hint from history—because today this Svante is the father of the world’s most well-known climate activist: Greta Thunberg.

(Some of the observations referenced in this comic were actually made in early work by Langley. They’re using a rock-salt prism because it doesn’t absorb infrared radiation, so they can get the whole spectrum)
