Fascinating that the phrase "in/capable of love" come up in conversation, almost in identical wording, on three separate occasions in Crime and Punishment. The first two, coincidentally, occur when Razumihin and Raskolnikov are describing each other to Dounia -

And the third when Svidrigailov is talking to Raskolnikov about Marfa Petrovna.

I wonder if 1) this wording is reflected in the original Russian and 2) if this was a deliberate choice by Dostoevksy. I feel like it has to be purposeful: Svidrigailov and Raskolnikov both being implied to be "incapable" of love unlike Razumihin...

Dostoevsky Villains Are A Certain Type...

If I had a nickel for every time the main villain of a Dostoevsky novel was an atheist nihilist anarchist cynic whose arrogance was a front for deep self-loathing, and who was ALSO a child r*pist, well, I'd have two nickels, which might not be much, but it means it happened twice.

Arkady Svidrigailov, Crime and Punishment, and Nikolai Stavrogin, The Possessed/Demons.

As Crime & Punishment is my first Dostoevsky book, there's a lot of character that intrigues me in the term of personality and your art has captured them very well, especially Rodya and Razumikhin (love your art boss!), but it comes to my curiosity if you were to ever have Svidrigailov or those two jerks (Luzhin and Lebezyatnikov) design interpret, cuz these three have became my personal favourite (alongside Rodya).

ooooo you know imma be completely honest I don't have drawings of these guys and I'm sorry 😣 But I do think they are intriguing!

I didn't really form a liking to Svidrigailov because he was just. such a shitty guy!!! And of course I understand his whole parallel to Raskolnikov. I've seen him called the "shadow hero of Crime and Punishment" before because he basically shows Raskolnikov the extreme end of his extraordinary man theory. if you reject the law and instead kill and indulge as you please, the outcome is a soulless freak like Svidrigailov, and Rodya finds that horrifying!!! It acts as a bit of a catalyst to kickstart his redemption arc. So yes, I do think Svidrigailov is an interesting inclusion to the narrative, but I still kinda hated him for his whole chasing after Dunya, killing his old wife, trying to marry a child, etc., hence didn't draw him aflhakfhajsdh my bad

Luzhin, too, falls under the category of a character who I definitely think is important to the narrative but who I didn't like. I mean he's a foolish egoist who only wants Dunya for control and dominance, and a lot of times he gave me secondhand cringe for his perfromative yaps about progressiveness.

I think Lebezyatnikov makes for a very interesting foil (Dostoevsky loves foils, and I think it's so neat) to Luzhin. While Luzhin is shallow and performative about progressiveness, Lebezyatnikov genuinely believes in progress and the betterment of society even if he's a little crazy and confused. and he actually has some moral qualities to him seeing how he stands up for Sonya when Luzhin tries to frame her for theft. I think he and Luzhin have such a funny bond too ahhahahah its all just Lebezyatnikov yapping and Luzhin being like "can this liberal freak just SHUT UP ALREADYYYY"

anyways sorry for lack of art but here are some of my thoughts on the characters 😭 maybe someday they will make their ways into my art
