Parallels between Raskolnikov and Marmeladov.

[Raskolnikov] feels victimized by the sacrificial love of mother and sister, for such love predetermines what he will be and what he must be, just as Marmeladov is victimized by Katerina by her insistence that he be like her imagined first husband. Marmeladov is permitted only the identity that Katerina Ivanovna will give him: the dutiful, sober husband who resembles her first husband, or at least as she imagines him to have been. Raskolnikov is permitted only the identity that mother and sister give him: the dutiful son, hard-working, morally undeviating, and destined to bring security and honor to them. Marmeladov tells Katerina by his destructive actions that she must accept him as he is and not as she thinks he ought to be. Since she refuses to relinquish the Marmeladov she has formed in her mind, he destroys the image by acting out another Marmeladov. His destructive acts are both aggression and appeal. The aggression is against the Marmeladov she insists he must be, and his appeal is to be accepted for what he really is. Something of the same aggression and appeal can be seen in Raskolnikov's relations with his mother. It is as if Raskolnikov were saying to his mother: I am not what you think I am, I am even the very opposite. I am not the ideal son, I am secretly the hateful son. You have the ideal image, but I am the vicious reality. Indeed, he says this in almost the same words in the notebooks.

ok so i finished my little stylized designs for crime and punishment characters!

top: raskolnikov, sonya, svidrigailov, porfiry, luzhin.

bottom: dunya, razumikhin, lizaveta, alyona, marmeladov, katerina.

i had a lot of fun with little design details, like katerina having a widow’s peak, or making the buttons on dunya’s dress match raskolnikov’s coat.
