“Is it a special day today?” You asked, eyeing your boyfriend’s back as he prepares breakfast.
Jeonghan quietly sighed as he flips the pancakes. “No. Just wanted to have a full stomach for today’s schedule.”
You nodded, smiling to yourself. Of course you knew it was Jeonghan’s 21st birthday today. How could you forget? But you and the boys were planning a hidden camera to make him think that you guys forgot about it. You felt bad, but it was only for today.
You guys ate in silence, with Jeonghan picking at his food more than usual while you hummed to yourself. He sighed again and excuse himself to get ready.
As he went upstairs to the bathroom, you quickly called Seungcheol.
He picked up after a few rings. “Hello? Y/N?”
“Hey. Is everything ready?”
You could tell his phone was on speaker since shouting came into the microphone, making you pull your ear away.
“Yup! We have a camera in every corner of the studio and we got some staff into the prank as well!”
“This is going to be so hilarious, I can’t wait.”
“Hey! That hurt! Hyung, Jun hyung hit me.”
“Wen Junhui! No hitting.”
Shaking your head, you placed your dishes into the sink and turned on the water. “Alright. Don’t be too mean, okay? I’ll come at around 4 and bring some food.”
“Alright! Y/N’s choices of food are the best!” Someone cheered, quite obviously Chan.
You laughed, saying a goodbye just as Jeonghan came down in his practice clothes. Sweatpants, t-shirt, small bag and an empty water bottle.
“Who were you talking to?” He asked as he fills up the bottle, screwing the lid tight.
"Oh, just a friend.” You said, firing off a quick message to Seungcheol.
Jeonghan nodded and tightened the strap on his bag before giving you a quick kiss on the cheek, then headed out the door.
"Let’s do it again, from the top.” Soonyoung said, stopping ‘Very Nice’ on his phone.
The boys panted, wiping beads of sweat of their hairlines.
They went through the song again before Soonyoung paused the music again.
"Hyung,” Soonyoung said, looking at Jeonghan. “What’s going on today? You seem… lost. Your moves aren’t as smooth as they usually are and you’re also half a beat behind.”
Jeonghan swallowed, shaking his head. “Sorry. I must’ve been thinking about something else.”
Soonyoung sighed, grabbing his stuff. “Let’s take a break, then. Jeonghan hyung, I’m sorry but can you stay and practice a bit more? Our concert is in a few days and we can’t have anyone lagging behind.”
Jeonghan simply nodded in response. Although Soonyoung was younger, what he says in the practice room goes as he was the choreographer of the group and the leader of the performance unit.
Footsteps shuffled out the door slowly, leaving Jeonghan alone in the empty studio with him staring at his reflection.
He plopped down onto the floor, sighing. Did you all really forget his birthday? Even you, his girlfriend, who knew him like no one else did?
Countless thoughts went through his mind while he moved his body with the music, pausing every now and then to sharpen a move.
Little did he know though, you had already arrived 20 minutes earlier with a big cake equipped with candles and snacks you knew the boys loved, especially your boyfriend.
"Should we go now?” Seungkwan whispered, peering through the glass door that separated you and Jeonghan.
“Yeah, we’ve tortured him enough already.” Seungcheol said, adjusting a candle on the cake you held.
“Wait, wait! Let me put it on video mode first! I need this on camera!” Seokmin cried, frantically clicking on his phone.
“Okay, we practically surrounded the room with cameras. You don’t need to film it yourself.” Minghao pointed out.
“Yeah, but still. Need it for teasing opportunities.”
You rolled your eyes and counted to 3 before opening the door, carrying the cake in front of you.
“Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you. Happy birthday dear Jeonghan, happy birthday to you!” You sang, the boys trailing behind you, some with party hats and others blowing streamers around the room.
Stopping in front of Jeonghan, you smiled at him, holding the cake up closer to his face.
Jeonghan opened his mouth, but closed it. He shook his head and tried again.
Junhui laughed. “Your birthday surprise. Y/N wanted to pull a prank on you and pretend we all forgot your birthday.”
Jeonghan made a small ‘o’ with his mouth while the rest of the boys snorted and high-fived in triumph.
"Yes! Got his reaction on my phone!” Seokmin exclaimed gleefully, smirking at Jeonghan.
The said boy start to say something before you stopped him. “I’m waiting, Jeonghan,” You tiled your head to one side. “The candles are going to ruin the cake.”
He turned back to face you and muttered a quick apology before closing his eyes to make a wish. Blowing out the candles afterwards, he gives you a small but affectionate kiss on the the lips.
"You’re not mad though, are you?” You asked as he pulls away, taking the cake from your hands.
"I would be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed. But I forgive you.” Jeonghan winked at you, slicing the cake in small pieces.
You passed the sweet confection around the room, and settled down on the floor with Jeonghan by your side, one of his arms around you.
"So,” He said between bites, “Where’s my birthday present, Y/N?”
You smiled to yourself without answering his question and kissed him on the lips with a sweet buttercream taste still in your mouth.
Smiling against his lips, you whispered.
"Go home and you’ll see.”
