This is a clip from [The Avarice Awards] (link two), from United Videogame Workers on Bluesky. The awards happened the other day. This segment is the award for The Workers' Choice award for "Most Corporate Speak/Tactless Layoff Announcement".
It was presented to Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO of Microsoft. one of the other nominees was Gary McKay, BioWare Studio General Manager. during this segment, the host, Cal, a game dev who is a former BioWare employee, talked about his experiences. transcript of what was said:
Host Cal: "I also wanted to take a moment just to go back. One of these is personally significant to me. As a former BioWare employee, I worked on Star Wars: The Old Republic, and I was laid off, basically when the Dragon Age: The Veilguard team was. And I don't want to act like the Veilguard team was treated well, because, just like them, I mean, we were all lied to. It was claimed that there would be no layoffs. It was claimed that there would be training for people. Obviously they can never say layoffs won't happen, they can't put that in writing because then they can't lay you off, but I found, the way I was treated, I was laid off and spoken to like I was one of the Dragon Age: The Veilguard people. It was actually quite confusing. I was not, I was not sure that I had been invited to the right call, and then it was just topped off by Gary McKay's statement that didn't, like, it didn't even acknowledge that there had been layoffs. It was just like, 'oh, like, we're doing so well, we're gonna make this project great', they didn't, like, the statement wouldn't even say like, oh, like, people lost their jobs. It tried to act like everyone that was on the Veilguard team had found other jobs. No they hadn't. It tried to act like everyone had received support finding those jobs. No they hadn't. And it was just, it's really, personally, angering, layoff announcement. Right, I've soapboxed enough."
