it's wednesday, so that means it's time to get reading!
Steady hands (just take the wheel) by Philyra
Summary: World-famous mystery novelist Killian Jones has just killed off his main character and is looking for a muse. Enter Detective Emma Swan. Or, when OUAT meets Castle.
Now, I'm not someone who watches Castle (though I have seen a couple of episodes) and while this read is probably fun for people super familiar with the source material, it's also not necessary.
I love the characterization that's going on here, and Emma and Killian slip right into this world as a hardened cop and a boundary-less charmer. I can tell the plots are largely borrowed from Castle, but it's still Emma and Killian, in all sorts of new situations.
Well written, and I really love the overall pace. Chapters are stretched over long periods of time, which really helps the slow burn effect without dragging the reader through too much of it.
Breaking Glass by swaggercaptain
Summary: All the air is punched violently from her lungs when his first three words are a question, one eyebrow arched high on his forehead in curiosity, "Who are you?" When the Snow Queen lodges a shard of glass deep in Killian's heart, how can Emma remind him of who he is when she cannot even remind him who she is?
Well, first of all, only read this if you have a death wish. I think Tess is writing this because she's some kind of dementor feeding off of our anguish--but regardless, it's an amazing story.
Painful as fuck, because it's impossible to imagine Killian in any world where he isn't head over heels in love with Emma--but that's the kick. It's impossible.
Tess is showing a story that tests the bonds of love, and cheesy as that sentence is, it's true. Beyond this being amazingly written and characterized, we also get to watch Killian fall in love with Emma all over again, and in a way that feels super satisfactory. And it's a brief read (gonna be 5-6 chapters), so the angst is fleeting.
edit: Bonus! I found this fic like an hour after posting this and thinks it needs to make this round.
Polished Stones by AthenaScarlet
Summary: When a boy claiming to be his son knocks on his door, Killian Jones is forced to face a woman who broke his heart and a past he can’t remember. But can he really be a man who can love again and help save a town in the process? Captain Swan AU with Cursed!Killian.
I've only just started this, so I can't give a super in depth review, but what I'm liking so far I really like. It basically kind of...switches the role of Neal with Hook, but what I'm enjoying is the fact that she made Killian Henry's father.
That's a twist you don't often see, let alone one with Killian as a cursed citizen, albeit one outside of Storybrooke.
Basically, this fic is super unique. I mean, Killian isn't even Hook. And Emma is already in Storybrooke, and...I don't want to give too much away, but yeah, it's unique.
But at the same time, it's also super well written and the changes the writer made are so different that I really want to figure out what's behind her motivations and what's going to happen.
