"Don't Wait For An Opportunity, Create Your Own"
By: Ash Nicole
Entrepreneurship in journalism is beneficial to a journalist. In this field of business, when waiting on an opportunity, journalists have the potential to wait much longer than they would have ever expected. Instead of pondering on an opportunity, journalists should create their own.
Many Chicagoland journalists are creating their own news outlets not only because it is easier, but because jobs are not available. When you are creating you're own content, and posting whenever you'd like, life is good.
A few self starting companies such as Swagger Are Us, Rivet Radio and Breaking Voices are located here in Chicago and are currently in the process of building their traffic to a greater level.
Journalists make great entrepreneurs for three reasons including...
Enterprise- The very practice of journalism requires knowledge of a space other than just writing and reporting. As journalists, you have the right to ask any question you desire.
Contacts- Journalists interview people daily. If a good relationship is developed with the interviewees, then you will have a better chance at being able to contact them again for another story or possible lead.
Hustle- Journalism is about hustling and making sure deadlines are made. Being able to hustle through tough stories of difficult tasks given to you in journalism will serve you well.
Terrell Johnson, the Editor-In-Chief of Swagger Are Us, created his branding website as an online street wear magazine. He explores the connection between style patterns relating to Hip-Hop and R&B.
He is a fashion expert who created a website relatable to not only journalism but fashion as well. Terrell also has developed a great work relationship from and among his readers and sources.
Rivet Radio and Breaking Voices are both applications that were created to make life easier for Chicagoans. Rivet Radio allows users the opportunity to customize their own radio experience. Breaking Voices has the ability to keep the community involved, allowing them to break news stories by sending them live stream. Both applications have the skill needed to become a successful entrepreneur.
Swagger Are Us, Rivet Radio and Breaking Voices are all self starting companies with many things in store for their users in the future.
