Swallow your pride.

Let it fester down in your stomach, bubbling frothing roiling inside you as you nod and duck your head, smiling and thanking for the littlest of things, oh so self-effacing.

Swallow your pride.

Find it in the mirror as your wear a new outfit, catch the feeling and crush it down into something manageable, because if you let it grow you might start to think you’re worth something, mightn’t you?

Swallow your pride.

Keep it behind your teeth as you smile, clench it in your fists as you bow and scrape to appease their ego, apologising not because you’ve done anything wrong but because they’re on a power trip.

Choke on it, because the alternative is speaking out, talking back, standing up and saying no longer. No longer will I jump to your whims, no longer will you have complete power over me, no longer will I hide who and what I am out of fear and a misplaced sense of humility.
