Emma's eyes widened as they focused on the figure. It was Zarek. That alone would have had her scrounging up some angry retort, but something was different. Something was wrong. Emma noticed a scarlet color glinting off his skin in the lamplight, and she could see a grimace on his face, as if he were in great pain... Unable to shake her instincts, no matter how much the guy drove her up the wall-- Emma began to run, closing some of the distance between them. "Zarek, what the hell happened?"

Every time he was jumped, it always left him shaken up. His heart racing, hard to focus on anything going on, let alone someone who might want to help him. If it had been Wendy, or even Killian, he might be fine. First instinct was always to run to one of them, because they made him feel safe.
But Emma?
Emma had him moving backwards, staring at her wide eyed as his breath came out in quick short gasps. He wasn't stupid, he knew she didn't like him, whether it was because he was a monster – a murderer – or something else he didn't know.
He didn't trust her not to pull her gun on him, even if she did seem concerned. One hand went up to shield himself, licking his lips once, twice, as he tried to calm himself.
Calm down, Zarek. Calm down.
Swallowing hard, he only stopped backing up, crawling backwards on the pavement, when he met the wall, his eyes meeting hers.
What did he say? That he'd been attacked again? That despite how he was a murderer he didn't want to kill people? He doubted she'd even believe him if he tried.
