So, someone has uploaded a bunch of 80s MLP content on youtube, swedish dubbed.

Here's the thing: Sweden has two dubs of 80s MLP. One from the 80s and a redub in the 00s. And this channel has randomly uploaded both, although different episodes/specials (so like, the movie is only in the 00s redub but then some random episode is in the 80s dub)

So I did a little comparison video - I also found some other clips around youtube, ergo where I got the redub of "Call upon the seaponies" when that full special barely can be obtained online otherwise.

I personally like the 80s dub a LOT more. Despite growing up in the 00s, that was the version I grew up with. The 00s redub feels... a lot more polished. Which is good, but at the same time it kinda loses a spark.

"Call upon the seaponies" is a good example of this. The 80s dub change the lyrics a bit: "The seahorses are coming!" While the 00s dub is more or less directly translated: "Call on your seahorses" - and while it feels more closely translated, it kind of feels more weird cause no one is speaking like that in Swedish.

The 80s dub was a little weird with the names, cause sometimes they changed EVERYONE'S names to be swedish (fun fact they changed Applejack to ISABELLA) but then they decided to actually stick to the english names (the 00s redub kept the english names the whole time). What I personally have a bit of an ick is how they do the baby ponies names. Because while they changed the names initially (They're called "Little Moonshine", "Little Sugarcube" etc), I did like them changing "baby" to "little" instead. Because it feels so unnatural when someone is speaking Swedish and they go "BABY HEARTROB! BABY CATTLE!"

You might wonder why they even redubbed. Simple answer: They lost the license they had for the 80s dub when they were releasing them on dvd. Plus, it is possible they weren't too happy with how the dub went... so, they redubbed it all. Though, a lot of us 00s kids still managed to grow up with the 80s dub, cause the 80s VHS tapes were easier and cheaper to buy lmao

So, in my binge to absorb the cultural treasure that is the animated Batman series', I did remember I had to look into Superman: The Animated Series as well.

And the thing is that I recall watching both when they were fresh and new, absolutely loving all three (Batman Beyond is included here). So, here comes an affirmation of my hunch about the Swedish dub of Batman and Superman.

Superman? Yeah, pretty good! He has pondus as we would call it. Batman on the other hand? Last time I heard the Swedish dub for Batman was 30 years, and I still remember it was not great. Any Swedish megafans will probably remember how grating his "fake death scream" at the raging volcano was fighting Kyodai Ken (I have not heard it since it aired in Sweden, and I still remember it was godawful), and listening to him here?

He sounds fucking sultry. Not what I am expecting out of the Dark Knight. Or den Mörka Riddaren in this case.
