Swee Pea…I’m currently painting a Popeye portrait for a show in Seattle inspired by this series of Olive Oyl as movie star paintings I created in 2020. Gifts From The Sea My first memory of watching television was a Popeye cartoon over 55 years ago. I can remember being fascinated by the little “Orfun” Swee Pea ...who not being a child of Popeye or Olive Oyl had a mysterious past and a strange tail and would crawl along the floor like a mysterious gift from the sea. I identified with this strange creature in some fascinating way that even today is lost in lost in a nostalgia almost forgotten. I remember my parents and family in some continuous violent physical battle of endless arguments of blows and punches which the cartoon had made a parody ...strangely it made me smile and think all was well and this was the world as it is and as it should be. The violence of the cartoon was lost on me as it was simply a reflection of the world I lived in and looked up to from my place on the floor. Swee Pea moved through this chaotic world with a endless charm and innocence that I connected to on a very base level and seeing him about the floor with his mysterious tail like appendage formed a improbable explanation in my infants mind....Swee Pea was like my family ..different under their clothing than others...different under their mind than others.
