Swee Pea…I’m currently painting a Popeye portrait for a show in Seattle inspired by this series of Olive Oyl as movie star paintings I created in 2020. I will share the Popeye painting in a few days there was a moment when I felt it had defeated me but I made a few changes and suddenly the clouds lifted and that failure emotion was gone. #urbansurrealism #oliveoyl #painting #sweepea #lowbrowpopsurrealists #pdxartist #portlandartist #gregoryhergert (at Brassworks Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cbf1OHWvOjd/?utm_medium=tumblr
Popeye The Sailor: The 1940s Volume 2 - Made To Order Blu-ray - Warner Archive - JUNE 18th 2019 - $21.99 (DVD $19.99) . Here come 15 previously unreleased adventures featuring our favorite two-fisted fighter that are literally out of this world! The secret to the seaman's success is "location, location, location," and with this new collection, you'll travel with Popeye and crew into outer space, all around the globe and under the sea! Continuing the chronological theatrical releases, this set covers the years 1946 and 1947. Popeye not only rockets to Mars, he explores the ocean deep, becomes a cowboy out West, fights pirates on the high seas and tackles wild game in Africa. He and his lady love, Olive Oyl, also find romance (and usually a Bluto-like rival) while traveling back to medieval times or exploring the fictional Middle Easter city of Badgag, as well as climbing mountain peaks in the frozen Klondike. This is classic animation at its finest - featuring zany cartoon action from the pen of veteran Jim Tyer and powerfully dynamic direction from animation legend Bill Tytla. Packed with a punch, loaded with laughs and heaping with heart, The 1940s, Volume 2 comes to port with plenty of Popeye appeal. https://www.wbshop.com/products/popeye-the-sailor-the-1940s-volume-2-bd Previous releases in the series: Popeye The Sailor: 1933-1938 Vol. 1 DVD Popeye The Sailor: 1938-1940 Vol. 2 DVD Popeye The Sailor: 1941-1943 Vol. 3 DVD Popeye the Sailor: The 1940s Volume 1 Blu Ray Popeye the Sailor: The 1960s Classics Volume One DVD . #popeye #popeyethesailor #oliveoyl #bluto #popeyedvd #popeyebluray #sweepea #kingfeatures #kingfeaturessyndicate #billtytla #jimtyer #cartoons #cartooncharacters #warnerarchive #manufactureondemand #cartoonsondvd #dvd #popeycartoons (at Portland, Oregon) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bx1pnu4B-qB/?igshid=d51fhhovthpq
Gifts From The Sea My first memory of watching television was a Popeye cartoon over 55 years ago. I can remember being fascinated by the little “Orfun” Swee Pea ...who not being a child of Popeye or Olive Oyl had a mysterious past and a strange tail and would crawl along the floor like a mysterious gift from the sea. I identified with this strange creature in some fascinating way that even today is lost in lost in a nostalgia almost forgotten. I remember my parents and family in some continuous violent physical battle of endless arguments of blows and punches which the cartoon had made a parody ...strangely it made me smile and think all was well and this was the world as it is and as it should be. The violence of the cartoon was lost on me as it was simply a reflection of the world I lived in and looked up to from my place on the floor. Swee Pea moved through this chaotic world with a endless charm and innocence that I connected to on a very base level and seeing him about the floor with his mysterious tail like appendage formed a improbable explanation in my infants mind....Swee Pea was like my family ..different under their clothing than others...different under their mind than others. #SweePea #Popeye #popsurrealism #beautifulbizzarre #hifructose #sailorboy #giftfromthesea #canadianart #popsurrealism #torontoart #lowbrow @galleryhouse_belinda #jamesfreemangallery #kochxbosgallery #dorothycircusgallery #damienromanfineart
