Sweet Mex, 34697 Alvarado Niles Rd, Union City, CA 94587
Sweet Mex seems to have started out as a Mexican sweets/ice cream shop. Judging by the number of mangos there, they probably sell a lot of mangonadas. At some point they added a taqueria and snacks menu.
For food, they have tacos, burritos, tortas, quesadillas, huaraches, pambazo, and tostadas. They have handmade corn tortillas (optional, they cost extra). Meat choices: asada, pastor, pollo, buche, carnitas, tinga, chicharron, chorizo, lengua, and birria. The lengua and birria are extra.
For desserts, they have a case of ice cream, bionicos, frappes, floats, elote, esquites, tostiloco, mangonadas, and much more. You can order by item number. They also have aguas frescas.
Quesabirria de maiz ($6): This was huge, like a Mexican quesadilla, about the size of three small street tacos. The taco was soggy (the birria is wet, stewed beef). The birria was fine but I didn’t like the sogginess of the taco.
Pastor taco, handmade single corn tortilla ($4.50): Lots of al pastor but the meat was very salty, unfortunately. It was shaved into bigger pieces. The meat was also dry.
Cheetos esquites: Very rich (lots of mayo?) with fresh, sweet corn. Not enough tang but I still liked it. Corn and Cheetos!
The ambiance is colorful and casual. The tables and chairs looked old. They had a few flatscreen TVs. Strip mall parking was easy to find.
