I have collected movie posters and memorabilia of his and other black films since I was a teenager. Back in July of 2016, thanks to my friend @jaimekailani’s son, Marley, a great young artist in his own right, I was able to spend an afternoon with Melvin at his apartment. He was apprehensive at first, but once I began talking to him about his novels and movies, he began to open up. He even let me walk around his apartment and, with my @leicacamerausa camera, shoot any room or detail I wanted. Over cigars and cups of tea, I told him about my collection and that I think the art of the 60s and 70s is so much cooler than now. He stopped me cold in my tracks and said, and I am slightly paraphrasing, “You are my friend now and I respect you. But you’ve gotta stop that nostalgic sh*t. Art is just as good now as it was then. You can’t live in the past. Live in the now and you’ll always be happy.” This experience truly opened my eyes. It was truly one of the best and most memorable days of my life with one of my heroes.
