Jellicle January Day 6: Etcetera as Etcetera from "Castelo Rá-Tim-Bum," a 90s Brazilian children's show. Bonus: Trapeze Cat (Alessandro Marba) as Etevaldo (Etcetera’s brother).
Since Etcetera doesn’t exist in the Brazilian production of Cats, I decided to draw her anyway. As a complement, I drew Trapeze Cat—a swing exclusive to the Brazilian production—as Etevaldo.
Since I didn’t grow up in the 90s, I looked up information on the Castelo Rá-Tim-Bum Wiki to learn more about them.
Castelo Rá-Tim-Bum takes place in a sort of magical castle filled with talking animals and magical creatures. The show stars a boy named Nino, who lives in the castle with his aunt and uncle, his friends from the neighborhood, and various residents and visitors.
Etevaldo (Wagner Bello) is an alien boy from the planet Rehe. His first visit to our planet included his first contact with the people at the castle. After reading a dictionary in a matter of seconds, he learned the human language, though he still makes some Portuguese mistakes. He traveled to Earth in his spaceship looking for fun and visits the castle frequently.
Etcetera (Siomara Schröder) is Etevaldo's younger sister and appeared only a few times. She was introduced to replace actor Wagner Bello after his passing. Interestingly, the actress had previously played the mother of both Etevaldo and Etcetera. In the plot, she is sent by Etevaldo because he couldn't make it to the castle that day. When she first arrives to meet Nino and the kids, she is poorly received and feels embarrassed, which leaves the group intrigued. However, they work it out, and she becomes friends with the children.
When asked where her brother is, Etcetera replies that he is "playing among the stars"—a beautiful tribute to the late Wagner Bello.
Fun Fact: Castelo Rá-Tim-Bum was originally meant to have only one season, intended just to fill a gap in the programming of TV Cultura (the station where it aired). However, it became a massive hit and was renewed for more seasons, defining an entire generation. In fact, this was the favorite show of both my mother and my aunt when they were kids!
