Swiss Guards, Italian Guardia Svizzera, corps of Swiss soldiers responsible for the safety of the pope. Often called “the world’s smallest army,” they serve as personal escorts to the pontiff and as watchmen for Vatican City 🇻🇦and the pontifical villa of Castel Gandolfo. 📜 The Swiss Guard is one of the oldest functioning military corps in the world. 📜 Becoming a Swiss Guard is not easy, for starters you must be Swiss, male, Catholic, single and under 30. 📜 Contrary to popular belief, their uniforms were nit designed by Michelangelo or Raphael. 📜 The Swiss Guard does have heavy duty armor, but generally carry the 16th-century basics. Halberd also known as the Swiss Voulge, dress sword, partisan, unarmed or simply baton. Glocks (semi-automatic pistols) and AK-47s (sub-machine guns) tend to be kept from public view. 📜 All Swiss Guards sign a mandatory 2-year contract of service to the pope and can be extended upon request. 📜 Swiss Guard earned a reputation for self-sacrifice and bravery, as demonstrated during the sack of Rome in 1527, when all but 42 of the 189 guardsmen died defending Pope Clement VII. The Swiss Guards prepared for similar self-sacrifice during World War II, when the vastly outnumbered guardsmen took up defensive positions as German forces rolled into Rome; Adolf Hitler, however, chose not to attack the Vatican. #swissguard #vatican #vaticano #roma #italy #cityscape #city #cityview #beautifuldestinations #beautifulcity #holiday #holidays #holidayfun #travel #travels #travelpics #traveltheworld #traveldiaries #travelphotography #travelblogger #travelling #traveller #travelgram #vacation #vacations #vacationmode #europe #eurotrip #ilovetravel (at Città del Vaticano - Basilica San Pietro di Roma) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVKqHd3pOEA/?utm_medium=tumblr
