Week 4 : Swiss Poster Styles

After looking at some of Herbert Matter’s posters, i researched into Swiss styled posters. I want to create a swiss influenced timeline poster.

Most posters have about 3-5 colours only, being Black, white, greys, and often a red, yellow, blue or orange shades.

They use a lot of geometric shapes or grids, and prefer to use photography instead of illustrations. The photography is normally B&W or monochrome with slight shades of orange or yellow. They use neutral Sans Serif fonts like Helvetica, Arial, or Active Grotesk. Typography is often the main element of the posters(except in Herberts case).

I want to create a swiss styled poster timeline for Herbert Matter, with either a use of photomontage or clean calming poster designs with asymmetric shapes and forms following swiss poster designs.

Herbert Matter did a lot of photography so i want to incorporate his photomontage styles and collages into my poster somehow.. A big item i would want to include is a swiss mountain range or illustration to represent his home country and where he lived until he was 28. I’d also maybe add some New York buildings or icons in the collage or photomontage layouts as he lived there for the second half of his life.
