Katana History
Comparing all weapons man has developed throughout history and you will realize that, no single weapon has received the same traction and fascination as the Japanese katana swords. To most of us, the endless movies of the samurai warriors and their fascination with swords and armor ready for battle on their horses and a colorful artistic personal flag is the most common Japanese symbol in our minds. Without a doubt, to the samurai warriors, nothing embodied their code of Bushido than their sword. The sword was so dear that is was deemed inseparable from their soul.
It is for these reason that that most of the Japanese culture revolved around the samurai and their first love, the katana swords. Back in those days, it was only the samurai warriors who were allowed to carry the katana swords. The katana sword served as a symbol of a personal honor and a social position of the warriors in the society.
Who were the samurai warriors? The samurai warriors were elite member of the army who were required to stick to the bushido. The bushido means way of the warrior, and was the code of ethics that guided the samurai warriors. The bushido was them associated with a number of values including courage, loyalty, respect, integrity and compassion. Furthermore, the bushido marked the value of living and dying in honor.
Each samurai warrior has his own collection of swords. The katana and the Wakizashi made the Daisho set. All swords were treated with utmost reverence with each sword serving a defined purpose. For instance, the Wakizashi was the emergency weapon and was carried everywhere the soldiers went. Although the samurai warriors were required to keep their swords outside the house, the Wakizashi was always with them in the houses and usually under their pillow. These smaller sized blades compared to the katana which was long were ideal for emergencies, close quarter combats, or even during ritual suicide. The katana sword was the ideal blade for the battle.
The modern day katana blades Today, the katana sword is still highly respected although quite a rare sighting. Back in the days, the smith put a great deal of passion when making the katana. The art used on the katana blades made them quite admirable. Today, most of these blades are manufactured in factories with the intended use being martial arts training. The sword comes in to bring balance to the unarmed nature of martial arts today.
There are still a good number of Kenjutsu master who believe that Jujitsu was the back-up plan for the samurai should they lose their swords or have it damaged during battles.
