Star Wars Prequel Appreciation Day 2016

 my 10 favorite things about the prequels @swpas (info)

1.the ambiguity of evil. in episode 1 to 3 we see the  many forms evil can take. good and evil are not black & white but a changing shade of grey. the chancellor as the highest democratic installment in the galaxy undermining the republic and turning the chosen one to the dark side… lucas knew exactly what he was doing. in the end the senate & jedi were so focused on destroying the seperatists, that they didn’t suspect an enemy form within.

2. the worldbuilding. i love that we got to see different sides of the galaxy in the prequels. We see all kinds of different planets, new species and get a sense of how it must be to life in this galaxy (at least that’s how i feel). introducing new worlds does not only make the star wars universe seem bigger it also gives the opportunity to tell new storys, to use the planets not only as a theater, but make them tell their own story.

3. the politics. i can hear fanboys screaming at me, but i don’t care. think about it. lucas decided to use history and tell it in another galaxy. ultimately nothing we see in star wars is entirely new. it is our history. so introducing politics to the star wars universe makes it seem much more approchable.

4. padme amidala. for me padme amidala is one of the best female characters i’ve seen anywhere ever. she starts out as a 14 year old queen, who is responsable for an entire planet. And she does a good job. in the next two movies she continues to serve the republic. sadly her scenes in episode 3 were deleted, but she obviously doesn’t think about stepping down because of her pregnancy instead she and a few other senatores are fighting the chancellor and try to sustain the democracy in the republic. she is bringing her attributes as a woman to the political stage and she doesn’t need a lightsaber or the force to slay.

5. obi wan kenobi. i honestly never liked ben kenobi from the original trilogy, he just seemed to be a bitter man, who wasn’t able to tell luke the truth about his father. seeing however what obi wan had to go through in the prequels gives him all the right to be bitter man, who to some degree wants to forget the past. he lost his best friend to the dark side. had to see the jedi order fall, the jedi being slaughterd and the republic being turned into an oppressive empire. Above all he thinks it is his fault, bc he trained the boy who is responsible for all of it. he needs hugs, like a lot of them.

6. anakin skywalker. again this has to do with my first point. anakin starts out as an innocent kid. and seeing him at such a young age and so very different of how we pictured darth vader to look under his mask, makes his whole journey to the dark side much more interesting. anakin turns to the dark side bc he wanted to do the right thing and save the people he loved. also look at hayden’s face *_*

7. costumes. trisha biggar has created some breathtaking costumes. costumes fit for a queen ;) She used elements from other cultures/history (no that is not a problem for me) and made them fit into a scifi movie. i love her work !

8. lightsaber fights. i just really like the fighting style of the prequels.and i honestly don’t know to elaborate this further…

9. anidala. they were my otp before i even knew what an otp was. yes some of their lines a cheesy, but for me their love always seemed more genuine than han and leias bickering from the ot. we all want someone to look at us the way anakin looks at padme.

10. the music. duel of the fates, across the stars & battle of the heroes. not even the biggest prequel hater hates those songs.

Good for you Catie. I have seen and own the prequel trilogy myself along with the original trilogy. I once once the entire saga in a row and had many ah-ha moments. I’m also a frequent visitor to the Star Wars Prequel Appreciation Society.

Ah yes, the great six-in-one-go approach. I once introduced one of my roommates to Star Wars that way. It is a lot of fun, if you've got the endurance - and of course it's only going to get harder with the release of the sequel trilogy. I'm curious, did you do it in release order or chronological order?

And the Star Wars Prequel Appreciation Society deserves all the awards. (There's a tumblr, too, if anyone else wants a little more prequel positivity on their dash.)
