I did my Stan Lee library program at Sachem Library this evening and the whole time, I was watching a guy in the front row who was intently watching, sometimes nodding his head ‘yes’ or 'no’ when I told a story, or whispering in his wife’s ear. I knew something was up with him. When I closed out with the Q&A section at the end, he spoke up and it turned out we were in the presence of comics royalty, as it was artist Sy Barry in the audience. Best known for the decades he spent drawing The Phantom for daily newspapers, he did work in the 1950s at DC and at Timely—which later became Marvel. As a result, he had personal stories to share of working with Stan that had everyone mesmerized. It was a really cool experience for all of us; the program went well, but that was the icing on the cake!
