Internet Television Taking Over?
I have never been one to watch television online but when I heard about the successful Australian web series, SYD2030, I decided to see what all the fuss was about and see if watching television online was really as great as I had heard.

This move from TV to Internet services is something that has been increasing within recent years with Rana Fooroohar, the assistant managing editor for Time magazine, saying this shift is reminding her of the tipping point several years ago when people realized they no longer needed a landline and would do fine with just mobile phones. Evidently this shift is occurring because access to digital technology is growing exponentially, along with technology advancing at a dramatic rate (Duncan 2013); and as a result more series just like SYD2030 are popping up all over the place as people turn to the Internet for their entertainment.
There are many reasons why people prefer television online and it may be because it’s free, or like I found, easy to fit in between uni classes or on public transport, but despite this, I still don’t understand fully what all the fuss is about. I am in agreeance to the fact that customers want to be entertained in new and exciting ways (Duncan 2013) and of course a massive plus to a web series is that audience can easily share around the content (Duncan 2013). I still however prefer the differentiation between watching television and using my laptop; especially in a time when networks purposely make it incredibly difficult to access content online, and watching television is a completely separate activity for me. This is the opinion Nicholas Deleon also holds, who said the idea that Internet services will replace cable TV is “perhaps the most overhyped and overanticipated phenomenon in tech history.”
Like most things however, only time will tell. Right now I think people just need to remember that, “the new markets will not end the old markets” (Broadcast&CableSat, 2010)it simply creates more choice. So for now I will stick to my recorded shows on Foxtel, and turn to the Internet when I can’t find anything else to watch and waste my time with.
