You’re gay because you like men, I’m gay because I hate women: A semi-serious queer analysis of Power Rangers S.P.D.

Disclaimer: This is not to say that these characters as these sexualities are canon in any way or that it’s homophobic to headcanon them another way. This is just for fun. We believe in death of the author here. The creator’s headcanons aren’t more canon than mine and mine aren’t more canon than yours. 

This analysis is going to be mostly centered on Sky Tate and Sydney Drew just because I have the most to say about them, but Z Delgado and Jack Landors will appear. Also, all underlined segments are timestamps.

Let’s start with Syd— She’s the very typical girly girl, but her relationship with Z can expand into a sapphic one very easily if you examine how they deal with each other. 

In Power Rangers 13x20, “Perspective,” each of the rangers gives their perspective on what happened during the last battle since the satellites had gone down and they didn’t have video footage. Everyone’s perspectives are deeply biased, and Syd is the last one to expand on her own perspective. During her perspective, Sky and Jack are both somewhat implied to have a crush on her and wanting to impress her in order to make her seem cooler, saying "I hope I make this look good so Syd'll be impressed" and "I hope I make this look good so Syd will be impressed" respectively. But Z says something distinctly similar to them, about how her knocking out some Krybots has “…gotta impress Syd… I hope…” 

In Syd’s fantasy, everyone (except Bridge) has a crush on her. Including the only other female member of the team. The presumption of heteronormativity was carrying this episode, as it was written in 2005, the same time Avatar: The Last Airbender was airing and nine years before they fought for a same-sex hand-holding end scene in The Legend of Korra. The mainstream consensus back then was simply that everyone was straight unless explicitly stated otherwise. However, to a Tumblr user in 2025, the fact that Z says something distinctly similar to the men implied to have a crush on Syd has a different connotation. The assumption of heteronormativity ended up making Syd seem bisexual by our time, and it implied that she either had feelings for Z or thinks that Z has feelings for her. 

Now, Sky. Where do I start with him? If the assumptions of heteronormativity made Syd seem bisexual, they made Sky look like the gayest guy on the planet. 

Around the other members of B-Squad, Sky clearly holds a gigantic superiority complex. He has a bitter relationship with Jack especially, for snatching away everything he ever wanted from under his nose. He’s also clearly prejudiced, he doesn’t think Syd could be the red ranger because she’s a girl, and considers Sophie a security risk solely because she lied about being human (because she was scared of this very thing happening.)

And bringing up “Perspective” again, there’s a gag in this episode where everyone has someone of the opposite sex flirting with them even when it doesn’t make sense. Jack has Syd flirting with him, Bridge has Syd flirting with him, Z has Sky flirting with her, and Syd has everyone except Bridge flirting with her. Some of this makes perfect sense, Jack has Syd flirting with him but not Z because she’s his sister. However, it makes less sense that Bridge has Syd flirting with him, when that’s never brought up in the entire established dynamic they’ve had on the show, and Z having Sky flirt with her makes no sense unless she’s just trying to fit in and her only other options are her brother and Bridge Carson. 

Sky’s fantasy is the only one where someone of the opposite sex does not flirt with him in an explicitly romantic way. Everyone seems to simply respect him as a leader or as an elder brother figure— Except Jack, that is. Jack actually seems to be jealous of Sky. And in Jack’s fantasy, Sky is jealous of him. Again, assumption of heteronormativity. In 2025, it becomes notable that every single other character seems to insist that someone else on the team thought they were attractive and desirable except Sky, and yet he shows a specific dynamic with Jack.

"But Skye," you ask. "It's Sky. No matter what his sexuality is, he wouldn't act like that. He just hates people."

And you're right... until you go back. Eleven episodes prior is 13x09 “Idol.” Where Dwayne Cameron says Sky’s name in such a reverent and adoring tone less than five minutes into the episode. Compare that to two seasons later when Tyzonn meets his actual lost lover, the same actor doesn’t say "Vella" in a tone that is even half as longing. 

Sky has a genuinely close relationship with Dru, and his reactions are completely different from anything we’ve seen with anyone else. The Tangarian Coils he shares with Dru are unique, as Sky doesn’t seem like the kind of guy to fraternize with people or develop such a close relationship with someone. But even through that, Sky will admit that Dru’s his closest friend. His affection for Dru is so blinding that he’s willing to accept gigantic holes in his story and refuses to believe that he’s been betrayed until Dru reveals it himself. 

Going into Dru’s reactions to Sky after the reveal, Dru spares Sky, only shooting off his coil and wounding him. Dru gives Sky every opportunity to live, when he could have ended it all right there. Combine that with lines during that scene such as him asking Sky if his Tangarian body was “beautiful,” and things seem to shift away from a typical platonic bond. 

Along with this, there’s also every interaction with Jack in this episode and beyond. Jack is the only character that explicitly shows that he has an interest in women, going so far as having a specific musical sting to show that he’s intrigued by one in 13x06 “A-Bridged.” In the DVD bonus feature, Greg Arnowitz mentions that he wanted Jack to be the type with easy charisma that makes women love him. However, if you take away the explicit assumption of heteronormativity, this ends up changing things slightly. 

If Jack has people falling all over him at every turn, then it would stand to reason that he might consider himself very friendly and charming. A charming smile that everyone wants to be close to is a hell of a drug. So the fact that he hasn’t been able to break through Sky’s walls and Dru is making him actually smile is a huge detail. 

Jack is jealous. However you want to slice it, Jack is jealous of Dru for being able to bring Sky out of his shell when he hasn’t been able to. Combined with the sheer romantic subtext hiding in this episode when you remove the filter of heteronormativity, you get one conclusion— Jack is jealous of Sky’s boyfriend. 

So, what’s the point of all this? Mostly, I was bored and wanted to find out why I headcanoned Sky and Syd’s sexualities so strongly. 

TL;DR: Nothing is gayer than something written by someone who doesn’t acknowledge that gay people exist.

Hi sorry to drop in with a long thing but I have a hot take regarding Syd in SPD

ok the thing about Syd being a vapid princes is she... kinda isn't? I mean she's more on the Elle Woods level. Like she's the first person to be like "Boom does so much for us, we should help him lie to his parents," she's the one who figured out how to get rid of the Krybots and directly confronts Sky for being a bitch in Walls and she does apparently have the most surveillance training/does undercover work.

The thing is in Stakeout, she's bragging to her amicable coworkers/friends that it's her birthday and being like slightly over the top about it. It's her birthday though, it's what people DO on their birthdays it's like texting your friend group "it's my birthday everyone has to be nice to me for the rest of the month."

Yeah there's the "I guess our invitations got lost in the mail" line but no one seems that upset, because the only person here I could imagine not actively dispising a rich person party is Bridge, who doesn't seem like he'd enjoy it either.

Jack's the one who specifically makes her work on a day she probably took off ahead of time literally to spite her, then leaves her alone to go brood in the park at a kid's birthday party, and she STILL instantly forgives him and apologizes for triggering his weird an unreasonable hang ups that he took out on her. Syd is a fucking Saint actually, if my manager pulled that shit on me he would be out the window.

Then I guess there's zapped where she does the undercover thing on her own but she didn't get caught because of anything she did, and they were already going off on their own to interfere In a mission anyway so like, it's at least not something unique to her.

The point is like, Syd's rich and likes fashion and stuffed animals yes but she's actually also really competent and nice in a way most people don't expect from the trope. The issue is that they didn't adapt any of the good Umeko episodes for her so she essentially gets one proper focus episode and an episode that's really about Jack so when it's her turn to do a flashback in Insomnia they had five clips to pull from and they're like "yes her arc is learning not to be a vapid rich girl" when that's really not it

(Side point my favorite stupid small detail in Zapped is when Syd is reading horoscopes and Jack's like "great I needed good luck," implying dude got a birthday a month ago and IMMEDIATELY became an astrology bitch and I love that for him)

okay yes to all of this! i will never ever ever stop thinking about syd sharing her birthday with jack. for that moment alone, stakeout is not only one of my favorite spd episodes, but one of my favorite episodes of power rangers of all time. (and syd being like "WE are gemini, jack, start taking notes, i have a powerpoint for this.)

i think something smart that spd did with all it's characters (though it's especially noticeable with syd) is to introduce them one way and then add depth over time. "this one's the girly rich one who's prissy about breaking her nails" as a starting point but slowly growing and adding to her character (she's also funny, she's also kind, she's also stubborn, she also loves her friends) lets the (mostly child) audience grow with her and expand their stereotypes and short hands about seeing someone like syd in other contexts (in other media, on the playground, etc.). you see it with sky too, "this is a self-righteous jerk who takes things too serious" but he also wants to be appreciated, he also wants to make his friends/family/mentors proud. or with jack "this one is a goofy rule breaker who lets power go to his head" but he also admits when he's wrong, he also learns from his mistakes, he also wants things to be fair and just for everyone.

i think this is definitely one of the strengths of spd, in comparison to some other seasons, these characters are dynamic and they learn and they grow!
