All about YORK
This weekend we've got two great opportunities to hear more about Sydney Lancaster and Marian Switzer's show, YORK. Tomorrow's Art Bus tour stops at Latitude 53 as well as Harcourt House, SNAP and Gallery @ 501, and Sydney Lancaster will be talking a little bit about the work when it arrives.
Then, on Sunday, tune into CKUA's Artbeat between noon and 1pm to hear Megan Clark's interview with the artists. If you miss it live, you'll be able to find the podcast version at ckua.com.
Boyle McCauley News is featuring Sydney Lancaster and Marian Switzer's YORK in their July/August issue.
“When we first started working on YORK, I was focused on a single idea about the show: I was interested in these abandoned spaces, and the stories that they could tell,” Switzer explains. “Over the next few months, the work evolved as I realized that YORK was about much more than the space. It touched on housing issues, the preservation of historic buildings, and most importantly our own stereotypes regarding the “type of person” that would reside in the York Hotel. I am hoping that people who see the show take more away from it than just their initial reaction to the images. I hope that, like myself, the work and the ideas it explores are something that they continue to ponder and discuss. The York Hotel was much more than just a building; it was an escape for some, a home for others. A first step or a last resort.”

Sydney Lancaster recommends an article about Our Digital Economy
Sydney Lancaster recommends the article by Suzanne Moon from The Guardian “In the digital economy, we’ll soon all be working for free – and I refuse” - The digital economy operates as a kind of sophisticated X Factor: someone will make it, but most won’t – and the real loser is society. According to Sydney Lancaster (Visual Arts Alberta – CARFAC’s Advocacy Director) I like the fact too that the author takes a larger political view – that in order for democracy to survive (as we currently frame it politically end economically) people actually need enough income to survive. This, to me, is an especially pertinent point when we live in a political climate in which it is in many many cases assumed that creatives are willing to work for free, post the products of their labour online for free, donate their work for a charitable cause, or do unpaid internships etc entirely for the “exposure” it will bring.
Sydney Lancaster's show in our gallery space is about to come down, so make sure you come see it! It's one of our favourite exhibits we've had.
