Name: Slane
Race: Sylvari
Gender: Male
Time: “Of the Night”
Class: Thief. Gunslinger/Daredevil
Allies: Miriya, Kaleb, Dhangalor, Corvus.
Relationships: Vaela (former....?)
Weapons: Bo Staff, dual Ruinmaker heavy pistols
Originally an outgoing person, Slane became a brooding miseryguts after his closest friend and podmate, Vaela, disappeared in a freak Asura Gate malfunction. After a period of grieving, he closed himself off from everyone around him, even the Pale Tree, as a way of dealing with his loss.
(more below. ‘Read More’ doesn’t seem to be showing up?)
At some point he was recruited by the Nightmare Court, but it wasn’t long before he was dissatisfied and contemptuous of their “Let’s torture people to ruin the Dream” attitude, and abandoned them...after wiping out an entire enclave and leaving it to burn. They still curse his name, but are privately haunted by what he did with the bodies of those Nightmare Court he eliminated.
Slane dropped off the radar figuratively and literally for a long time before showing up in the Sea of Sorrows incident to aid in the destruction of the Ancient Karka. It was around there he acquired his...passenger. A Sclerite parasite bonded with him and is permanently attached to his back. He treats it both as a partner and as an extension of his own self, as it will watch his back while in combat, lashing out with tendrils or even flicking throwing daggers at enemies he hasn’t seen yet. It seems to be a beneficial arrangement, though most people, including other Sylvari, are disgusted with the concept of a parasitic union like this.
During the Scarlet War, he was recruited by the Vigil (or rather, they merely approached him to politely ask for his help), and was assigned to a Pact combat team of mixed strength. He acted as their scout, surveillance, and assassin until Scarlet fell. He still follows the team around, as they’ve ironically grown on him a little bit.
When Mordremoth awoke, Slane barely registered it. His bond with the parasite, and the traumas that he’d already been through had long since hardened his mind against intrusion. At the most, he viewed the Dragon’s voice as an annoyance.
During the Maguuma assaults, his team was temporarily separated when their airship went down. Before he could rejoin them, however, he was confronted with a sign that perhaps Vaela, long thought lost, was not as lost as he’d believed. The idea filled him with an emotion he hadn’t felt in a very long time; hope. But at the same time... he felt nothing but dread. If Vaela had returned, she was definitely NOT the same as when she’d left. The path of cloven bodies reeking of Mist energies, and scrawled with his name carved in them in glowing script proved that much.
While he wants to find her, he’s secretly terrified of what will happen when he does. Will she accept the person he’s become? Or contrarily, will he be able to accept whatever SHE has become?

(Notes from Me: Slane was the first toon I made in-game. He’s ironically the most unchanged out of all of them; I found the perfect look for him which was a kind of bounty-hunter/witchhunter look, and those Ruinmaker pistols are just so damned good looking on him. When I got that Sclerite backpack and put it on him, I knew exactly what his story was, and how that...thing would work with him. I had this image of him in mid-combat, either tossing the guns to the thing, so he could use his staff or swords (he was originally sword/pistol or sword/dagger), or that while he was using his pistols, it’d be using his melee weapons to defend him.
That, and the Dagger Storm skill, which has a Thief throw out dozens of bouncing blades... I kept thinking that he’d be throwing daggers, AND the Sclerite would be throwing daggers as well, making things really heinous. LoL)
