names or numbers, numbers or names

Sometimes, the others complained they had been numbered, not named. They didn’t like it, the lack of individuality, the constant reminder they were far from an ordinary, loving family.

Five knew they’d got it wrong. They’d been numbered – 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 – and named – Number One, Number Two,  Number Three, Number Four, Number Five, Number Six and Number Seven. Unusual names to be sure, but Five was okay with that. They were unusual children. What he didn’t like was that their names were wrong.

Numbering them was okay. It made sense even, the six of them were a miniature army and numbers worked just as well as code-names when it came to organisation. It simplified things. How exactly they had been numbered was a subject of much discussion.

Six suggested it was in order of power-weirdness, except that didn’t make sense because little Seven had no powers at all.

Seven suggested it was in order of Dad’s favourites, but that didn’t work either because Five was certain Dad hated rebellious Four even more than the rest of them.

Five thought it was arbitrary, and so didn’t mind being 5, or Number One being 1, or Number Seven being 7.

He minded being called Five though, and calling 1 One and 7 Seven and the rest of them their names, because it just didn’t fit. Things should fit, he thought. It was important somehow.

1 was self-important, brass, distant, rude, but not as grown up as it thought. It was navy blue and in three dimensions.

Number One was sort of blue, so that was okay, but a lighter, pale blue. He was polite and hardworking and eager.

Number One and 1 were not the same at all, and Five couldn’t see how anyone could mix them up.  

2 was laid-back, quietly mocking, but usually helpful and easy to understand. It didn’t have a colour as clear as 1, but sometimes gave Five hints of yellow. He liked 2.

Number Two was loud and bright and giggly and confident and Five didn’t always like her that much. She was orange, close to yellow, but not close enough.

3 was younger, vividly green, silly and bouncy but surprisingly good at what it did. Five wasn’t sure what exactly that was, but he knew it was good at it. That was reassuring.

Number Three was also green, a shade or two darker, but a very close match, so that at least didn’t bother Five about him. He was too serious though, not playful like his number. And very good at throwing knives. Not quite so reassuring.

4 was sapphire blue, study, reliable, kindly.

Four was chaotic, hot pink, rebellion.

Putting them together gave Five a headache.

6 – quiet, sensible, mysterious.

That one fit.

7, however…

7 and Seven was the worst mix-up of all. 7 was powerful, a trickster, not easily contained unless conditions were exactly right. Every colour at once, a swirling rainbow vortex of magic. But Seven was, well, Seven. Small, timid, kind but kind of useless. Nice, but with no powers at all. No colour either, just pure blank white.

Five was the only one that fit the number. They were both bright, blood red. A sense of humour, if a strange one. Everywhere and nowhere all at once.

The others cheered when Mom said six of them were getting proper names, but Five shook his head. He already had a name, and it was right for him. He told her to give Seven one instead.

I have mentioned before that i love the sound of drums because they feel like rain. But theres a set of three drummers that have been drumming outside of my store for the past three hours….playing the same exact song nonstop….and it’s literal hell. My senses are on fire. I cant feel my ears. My head is throbbing which is making my eyes hurt. My skin has that rain feeling but its not comfortable anymore because its just….loud.

Didn’t realise my lowkey synesthesia extended to fictional characters until I was writing and realised it actually does annoy me Diego is blue in the posters when obviously he’s green!

I was watching interviews earlier because i wanted to try to establish what Josh’s voice felt like. Josh’s voice, much like Tyler’s, feels warm and smooth. I feel Josh’s voice on my collar bone area. It feels like when you put your thumb on the base of your throat and reach toward your shoulder with your pinky, with your fingers and palm laying on top of your collarbone. It doesn’t really have a specific texture, but it feels like when the sun hits you just right while you’re driving or riding in a car. ((Hence why i refer to Josh as my sunshine. His voice is just so light and warm.))

Synesthesia Stuff.

Hey yall. Continuation of my other post for my about me page. Here are what some sounds feel like to me. As I begin to pick apart sounds and tones, i will update so that its easier for you (and me!) To understand. I’ve had this condition since i was little and i have never had a chance to sit and write about what i feel from certain sounds, so it may take me awhile to be able to interpret them!

Percussion and Basslines : my favorite sound. Feels like rain on my skin. If im really focusing on just drums its on my forearms right by my elbows that it feels a bit chilled, but the rain sensation is all over.

Woodwind and Brass Instruments: feel cool, or chilly. I feel these on my calves and ankles, sometimes the top of my feet.

Guitar, violin, ukelele, and other string instruments: i feel this sound on the tops of my shoulders. It feels like sand when you bury your hands in it. Its both warm and cool and a bit gritty.

Male voices: theres a reason i prefer male singers over female, and its because most male singing voices feel warm. I dont really have a specific area that they affect more, or a texture that is specific to them. However, Tyler Joseph’s voice feels like swimming in a shallow lake. Its smooth on my skin, and its very warm, but it has a chilly undertone. I feel it mostly on my hands and wrists and my ankles and feet. Alex Gaskarth’s voice feels like walking on fresh cut grass in the middle of summer. Its got a texture to it thats hard to explain, but its so warm that you just want to lay on top of it. I feel Alex’s voice mostly on my neck.

Female voices: female voices have a chill to them that is hard to explain. Its not that i find them haunting or cold, its just that they are significantly less warm than male voices. Again, i dont have specifics for them..but Halsey’s voice feels like making a snowball. Its chilly and compact, and i feel it a LOT in my finger tips. Kelsea ballerini’s voice feels like walking through a breezeway. Its light on the skin and very airy feeling.

Alarms, bells, high pitched whistles, and alerts: these sounds are what made me realize that i was different. When i was younger, especially, I cried and had a panic attack during fire drills, or when there were weather alerts. They hurt my ears a lot. I got made fun of because my elementary school teacher would have to tell me when the “surprise” fire drills were so that i could stay by my teacher and cover my ears and close my eyes. These sounds, like i said, hurt. They feel like pinching in and around my ears depending on the sound.

Synesthesia is weird bc sometimes i dont notice it and others my brain is just like "YES BITCH DO YOU FEEL THIS SHIT."
