SOLVED: Gmail Not Syncing On Droid 2 (Android 2.3.3)
The wife's phone (Verizon Wireless Droid 2) was updated to Android 2.3.3 recently and Gmail syncing stopped mysteriously. For whatever reason, either Google or Verizon removed the Accounts and Sync menu item which let you control how accounts are sync'ed (automatically or not). I looked through every Settings option on her phone and an option to enable/disable background data syncing was not to be found.
Removing that option is stupid, stupid, stupid.
She wasn't the only one that had this problem, either. I searched for an answer and found none. Most other options involve removing accounts, resetting the phone to factory reset or other steps. Of course, a factory reset would set it back to defaults which likely enables Background Sync.
Try installing the Power Widget and make sure Data Sync is enabled.
If you haven't installed the Power Widget, long press on home screen and select Widgets from the menu. Scroll down to Power Control and select it. You will have a number of options available to you. Make sure Data Sync is checked. Hit OK.
The Power Widget will be displayed (see below. I took the defaults). You want the Data Sync icon to have a green bar under it. If it doesn't, click it to turn it on. Sync should now work.
You can always delete the Power Control widget by long pressing on it and moving it to the Trash can that will appear.
It's shit like this that gives Android a bad name and deservedly so.
A Time Of (technical) Sorrow
It's been a hard time lately. My work laptop died a while ago - after 3.5 years of dedicated service it just couldn't take it anymore. I don't blame it, I feel the same way sometimes. It's a terrible thing to be an advanced computer (or programmer) and have to work on software that is so ancient. Should have my new one by the end of the week.
Had a power outage at home also which totally screwed up the wifi on my HP Photosmart C309. What a piece of crap. A search on the internet shows this is a common problem. I hate printers at the best of times but they always seem to be crappy, unserviceable an have overpriced ink.
My home desktop computer (iMac) didn't go unscathed either. It suffered some data corruption which stopped any of my iDevices from syncing. Turned out to be rather easy to fix, just had to follow this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1747?viewlocale=en_US
On the plus side I upgraded my iMac mini from 1G to 4G memory with Snow Leopard Server- runs very nicely on the home network! Tonight I plan to upgrade the HDD in my iMac from it's standard 250G to a shiny new 1T drive.
