it might not be showing on her face, she might not be jumping with joy --- an excessive waste of energy --- but niska is glad to see him. he’s up and about, he’s moving, and she has seen leo in worse shape than this. ( that’s probably a reflection of the life that he leads. but it’s the life that they all lead, always on the run. his body is just more fragile than hers is. less easily repaired. ) if she’s honest, there was a time, all too clear, where she wasn’t sure she’d see him again.

he also knows that he dislikes the idea of leaving; he has a friend, here, he’s learnt to fit in, he can produce pictures which are aesthetically displeasing and expend energy pointlessly kicking a ball around a field. sam doesn’t know what it makes him feel, except that it’s like his insides are twisting. that might be impossible, but he also wants to storm into one of the unused rooms in this flat and slam the door.

❝ oh, i’m fine. ❞ she is not fine; she sounds like she’s been running, even though she’s gone nowhere, and there’s a shaking in her right leg that she can’t control, jittering so fast that it looks like it’s had too much caffeine, all on its own. layla sits down heavily, sinking into her seat and hoping it can save her from this…whatever this is. it doesn’t feel normal, but then, what is normal? things change.

the whole world has changed. what’s going on with her body is nothing compared to that.

she attempts a smile. it’s a little more wan than she’d like; even she struggles, sometimes. ❝ just need…to rest for a minute and i’ll be okay. honest. ❞

❝ there’s not exactly a friend to synths support group, is there? ❞ layla is positive there are more out there. she knows it; she knows that there are always going to be people who like them as beings, and not just servants to carry out their every whim. but it’s hard to be public about that, when life is treated as a malfunction — and god, if that’s the case, she’s malfunctioning more than any conscious synthetic is. she’s met some of them. maybe they scare her, a little, but so do a lot of people.

a lot of things scare her. she’s trying her best to work through that, instead of letting fear win.

❝ i think we all do. ❞ layla feels like one of those spinning tops; everything’s whirling too fast for her to keep up, energy she doesn’t have flying off in each rotation, and when she thinks it’s finally come to an end, she finds herself dizzy and wobbly, unable to quite stand upright. how do you adjust? how do you fight against restrictions when you’re restricted by your own body? layla wants to do more, she does…but she can’t.

maybe this is her way. she knows synths already, has established herself as a safe space, prior to day zero. maybe they’re sat on a bench outside her shop ( and where did summer go? she’s still needing a jacket ), but maybe this is something. if leo is on the same side, if he wants…something close to what she does, it’s something.
