they're not. Lumax clears. The only ship I like better than theirs is Duzy. They're not too prominent and are portrayed exactly like a teenage romance is supposed to be. So even though they're not as important (or maybe BECAUSE) I love them.
Lumax has layers and is treated with seriousness and actually has some dynamism - even if it's on/off it's not just a gag.
Max being a bad girlfriend is a great way to misread intent. A show is not just what you see, but most importantly what it's trying to show you. We then label it good or bad, depending on how successfully it manages to express itself without relying on the audience to make do with "directions". For eg. you sometimes know a situation is sad even if the situation itself didn't make you sad. Like in MY case, El yelling Papa a bajillion times is annoying but I'm not daft enough to take that as being the show's intent. No. We are supposed to feel bad for her and agree that horrible things are happening.
Max being made the centre of Lumax is not the intent of the ship, but a writing flaw that has been previously pointed out and summarily dismissed by the high white council of analysts. The Duffers have trouble writing for characters testing positive for melanin. They also have a problem writing for people not El or Hopper. The characters they write most for are the ones better off among the gang of characters (except El - but she's OPed as hell so maybe not even that)
