A big reason behind the ideas of the ‘ghetto’ come from this disgusting practice of legal segregation that was never truly addressed or fixed. The effects of these actions are still felt today in inner city communities that are often too poor to improve their neighborhoods and schools. Housing inequality is a main factor behind what schools a kid goes to and how rich that school is, and that ultimately decides what college they get into and what profession they practice. The wealth gap is not some ‘per chance’ thing. The wealth gap was calculated, and intentional. Politicians, both liberal and conservative did not want blacks and POC having the same opportunities as their white counterparts. They created systemic racism, and systematic oppression. Laws and ideas that have been slightly altered, but truly never changed or abolished. We never lost the jim crow laws, we simply changed what they looked like. Police violence is directly tied to housing and wealth inequality. Health care and insurance is tied to housing and wealth inequality. Public school and colleges are tied directly to housing and wealth inequality. This country was built on racism, and prejudice. And instead of teaching that and fixing it, instead we hide it and pretend we’ve grown and risen above it, when in fact we have not.

Can explain to me how Blackout perpetuates systematic discrimination based on race? How Black people practicing self-love and people within their social identity group has anything to do with furthering the oppression and anti-blackness we face on the daily? People saying that  either have no idea what actual oppression is or hasn't bothered to read the first thing about segregation in their entire lives.

Racism can be committed against white people

Cis/heterophobia exists 

Cultural appropriation in any form is okay

Men can play trans women (or that any historical figure can be played by played by someone opposite their race/gender)

Systematic oppression against PoC, women, disabled, people of marginalized genders associations, and sexual orientations does not exist

Ok like Theres a difference between "i cant be racist i have a black friend" and "i have a black friend and i cant stand when people act racist towards them because theyre a good person and dont deserve that systematic opression, just like all people dont."

Some people tend to respond with things like "why can't we all just be nice to each other" when pointed out the difference between being rude to someone and systematic oppression. The thing is that oppression isn't a conscious choice, it's a complex system put in place long before any of us were born and it has continued to work in such a way as to favor the privileged classes. It's not something you can just get over by being nice to people. The media is constantly subjecting us to misogynistic, homophobic, transphobic, and racist ideas and normalizing them to the point that people begin to believe these things are true, even on a subconscious level. This is the power of the media, and no matter how unbiased you try to be our entire culture is made to constantly try to convince you otherwise. The only way you can ever hope to beat this system is to be very aware of your privilege and the stereotypes and biases the media feeds you. You must fight the media's effects on your conscious and subconscious mind and be constantly vigilant, or you will fall into the same pattern of thinking that has perpetuated this system all this time.

Despite legal prohibitions on discrimination, housing in America remains highly segregated. Only a third of African Americans live in a neighborhood that is mostly white. One reason is that the annual income of most black families is substantially below that of most white families. Another reason is banking 'redlines'--refusing to grant mortgage loans in certain neighborhoods, typically those with large black populations. Since buyers could not get a mortgage, home-owners had to lower the price of their houses to sell them. As home values plummeted, white families increasingly left these neighborhoods, which had the effect of increasing the percentage of black families. The 1968 Civil Rights Act prohibits redlining, but many of the segregated neighborhoods it helped to create still exist. Moreover, minority status continues to be a factor in the lending practices of some banks. Studies indicate that Hispanics and African Americans have more difficulty obtaining mortgages than do white applicants of comparable income.

Also, part of the reason suburbs are primarily white is because of busing which was enacted in 1971 to help integration. It carried children out of their neighborhoods to better schools, but it was prohibited across school districts which were drawn to specifically keep races apart. There's nothing better about them. They were created for racism.

i'm really tired of hearing people say that certain schools and neighborhoods are "bad" or "ghetto"

because most of the time they mean predominantly black.

do you know why those schools are predominantly black?? because schools are separated by districts or neighborhoods.

do you know why those neighborhoods are predominantly black?? because of segregation.

behind segregation was racism which you're now systematically perpetuating because a certain group of people were forced into certain areas and oppressed into poverty where they struggled to keep their own culture which you now deem as "ghetto" and assume to be uneducated because they grew up different and didn't have opportunities and had to stay in that same neighborhood and send their kids to that same school

so next time you talk about "the ghetto side of town" or "the bad school" think about segregation, get off your fucking high horse, and call yourself an asshole
