haven’t been food posting like I said I would, so here’s some food from the past few days! (This features me breaking down each meal like a food critic, just be warned)
Kifli, strawberries, salami and peppers for breakfast:3 (from home)
Kifli: one of my favorite breads, soft and light, slightly crispy and lightly flaky on the outside and soft and a bit chewy inside.
Strawberries and peppers: light, ripe and sweet! It’s nice to have fresh fruits and vegetables in Europe.
Salami: AHHH THE BEST!! The brand is Pick, and that specific brand we can no longer get in the US, and we can’t bring it over from Hungary either bc they don’t allow it across the border:( It’s addictive and salty, very rich because it has high fat content. Kinda melts in your mouth. Chewier rind and melty inside.
Wild boar pörkölt, nokedli and cucumber salad! (From home)
Pörkölt: one of my favorite Hungarian meals. The meat is from one of my grandma’s boyfriend’s friends, who hunted it himself. My grandma took it and cooked it! Very rich, very salty, deep flavors of wild boar and paprika. The saltiness balances out nicely with the chewy nokedli, which is like… egg noodle bits??
Cucumber salad: 10/10 blend of sweet and sour. Crunchy cucumber slices in vinegar with sweetener in it. With paprika sprinkled on top, it finishes the whole thing off.
Cola flavored Oreos. (From the Asian store in an Austrian shopping center) I was very conflicted about these because they were good but like… also disgusting. The tang of the cola filling matches the drink exactly, but doesn’t really match with the chocolate cookie all that well? Honestly I just saw them at the store and wanted to try them. Not disappointed, since I wasn’t expecting them to be good in the first place.
CHIO CHIPS. (From Spar) AUGHHH. The paprika flavored ones are my absolute favorite. They’re like Lays bbq chips but 10x better. (Ignore all the snacks around the chips, that’s just stuff to take home with us to the US)
Breakfast the next day! Strawberry Danish and iced caramel latte. (From Balmora)
danish: SOOO good, but a little too sweet. The pastry was crispy, and golden flaky. There was a sugary cheese filling inside and waaaay too sweet strawberry jam. The tartness of the actual strawberries on top kinda saved it.
Latte: genuinely wtf are lattes in Europe? I always get a nice iced caramel latte in the US and it comes out a medium brown color, tasting like caramel flavored, creamy coffee. This was, I kid you not, ice and coffee flavored milk. You can see the coffee to milk ratio in the glass, which I understand bc some people might not want THAT much coffee, but then like… put it in a smaller glass. There’s so much milk in that thing that I literally cannot taste the coffee. Just the caramel. And even that is barely there.
breakfast the next few days! Cserpes yogurt!! (From the Maci Húsbolt)
this is my FAVORITE yogurt brand IN THE WORLD. It’s creamy, slightly tangy?? And has a distinct flavor that I’ve never seen any other brand replicate. You can get it plain or with fruit jam in the bottom. It’s very liquidy, and not thick at all, which makes it feel less heavy to eat, and comes in a massive cup.
Fried Teriyaki Udon with beef, tempura shrimp and Coke Zero (from Samurai)
so I’m not entirely sure why we went to an Asian restaurant our first day in Budapest, but I’m not complaining. The food was BOMB. I ate everything on that plate, plus a plate of tempura shrimp. The meat was perfect, slightly chewy and cooked well, the noodles were thick and indulgent, the vegetables were fresh and crisp and the sauce was sweet, savory, thick, rich and almost decadent. I was a bit confused by this restaurant bc from the name, I’m pretty sure it’s a Japanese place, and it’s decorated with cherry blossoms and samurai imagery on the inside, but then the entire place is run by Vietnamese people and the menu is Japanese, Vietnamese AND Chinese. So. Confusing. But I’m not complaining! And it was cool to hear people speak Hungarian with a foreign accent!
Breakfast the next day! Scrambled eggs, poultry sausage, debreceni, cantaloupe and cherry yogurt. Not pictured is my 3 mini croissants with Nutella spread on them and my multi fruit juice :3 (from Hampton by Hilton aka our hotel in Budapest)
honestly kinda mid? But like, mid on the good side. I wasn’t expecting amazing things from hotel food. This ain’t the Intercontinental. But the cantaloupe was actually like… ripe? Which surprised me bc these days, people can’t seem to find or serve a ripe cantaloupe for the life of them, so bonus points for that. Also, the Nutella was off brand. Juice was good tho :p
Coffee at the Müvész cafe. I had a cappuccino, which this is obviously not a picture of, but this was the cake selection at the same cafe. Was a REALLY good cappuccino, not too hot, perfectly sweet with a packet of honey in it.
Cognac cherry sundae bigger than my fucking hand, dear lord (from Gerbeaud)
every year in Budapest, my mom needs to visit Gerbeaud to get her annual slice of Eszterhazy cake. So naturally, every year I have to go with her and get an absurdly massive-ass sundae. This one had whipped cream, a chocolate macaron, cherry foam, 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream, 1 scoop of chocolate ice cream, chunks of chocolate sponge cake, cherry compote, and an actual cognac cherry on top. Jesus. What the actual fuck are they feeding the Gerbeaud menu curators??
Dinner… ough… this was a burger w meat, tomato, lettuce, onion, cucumber, lettuce and ketchup. Next to it is gyümölcsleves which is like… creamy fruit soup? This meal was good but also makes me feel icky now that I think about it because I was sick that entire night after dinner. It just WOULD NOT digest. I felt ill the whole time bc it was just like… stuck in my system. Eughh….
(From the train station) Next morning I couldn’t eat bc I was still feeling sick from the stupid burger (although I felt quite a bit better bc it had… ahem… exited my body.) so I drank this drink. Tasted really nice and refreshing after all that heavy food. I also drank a water bottle full of LMNT powder, which is just my normal daily electrolyte drink for my salt deficiency.
(From Gyropolisz) Later that day I actually ate, but I only took a picture of my Almdudler lol - that’s an apple soda, if you’re not familiar :3 I also had a Gyros plate with fresh vegetables, meat and fries. I only ate about half the plate. That was my only meal for the day bc of the GODFORSAKEN BURGER.
Breakfast this morning!! Apple pocket and hot chocolate. (From Buborék)
apple pocket: a bit too sweet, could’ve used more filling in it. Overall pretty good. The pastry was flaky, but the filling was a bit too mushy, and again, too sweet.
hot chocolate: PERFECT. Doesn’t taste how you would expect, rich, dark chocolatey, slightly bitter, not too sweet at all, creamy. Extra points for the beautiful latte art on top.
That’s all for now :D
