today you said you were crusty and fucked up and i was beautiful and smart and i want to tell you that you also are. that you can be it all: crusty and fucked up and beautiful and smart. that you can be a glossy magazine girl too, because damn, that's what you are.

I started dating five years ago, in an attempt to counteract my parents' destiny-as-prophecy. he was funny and interested in me from the start, and i was young and thought that love was something i could learn to do if i worked hard enough at it. and that is how i became a rabbit: jumpy, afraid of loud noises, of touch, of hurting others by being my own person. so i chopped my hair to my chin because he liked it in a bun and left.

you know the rest: office depot dream butch. hacking conversion therapy. that year i learned to sneak around and learned that i was capable of feeling something other than curiosity about someone else, but he still haunted me, i still felt nauscious whenever they would inch closer and flee whenever their hand brushed my thigh. it took a long time to remember that there was pleasure to be found in being close, and by then it was too late.

the third time i settled, driven by curiosity once more. he was smart and talked more than me and was so damn patient. we did not inhabit the same physical space for two thirds of the year so he was something i could handle. but in the end i knew he deserved better, that you can't keep extending expiration dates, that i could never give myself over completely.

i did not know what i wanted the fourth time. i'm still processing (buzzword), and maybe it was what i needed at the time, to face the monster head on, to learn to be raw or something like that. all i know for sure is what heartbreak feels like, 11 pm oscar's night and then one week after my birthday. it feels like friends opening doors and staying an extra twenty minutes. it feels like writing until 2 am every day for a week in the red room. it feels like building a home, like wearing my hair down.

i used to pick at my scabs as a kid, anxious to see the new skin forming underneath (and i fell down a lot). and so this is why i am so good to you: because i too am crusty and fucked up, and i grew tired of it. you deserve someone who will stay up with you the entire time while the wound scabs over, while the white blood cells do their work, while the crust peels away naturally.

because that is what you have done for me. you touch my thighs and i do not flee anymore. you always ask. you walk me home. you like my hair down.

because that process is messy and wonderful and i want to be there every step of the way. no--i will be there.

Motivation Gone Wrong. (Apr. 13, 2012)

Exam period: 4 more exams, and 2 more papers to go. ...am I ready?

Reading all day again. Seems that I haven't gotten anything done. There's really nothing I can tell myself that I've actually accomplished recently ...well, the intense reading aside.

I have the motivation. It's just that I take it out in a quite different aspect, and not exactly the appropriate one either.

I can do it. Just finish them up. Regurgitate your thoughts. This is what it's all about. You know what to do. ...I mean, write.

(Ahem.)
