I’ve shared this article before, I’ll probably share it again. But I’m thinking about it a lot as I field student requests to serve as a reference for TFA applications. My issues with TFA as a model and phenomenon are many and deep. But when you have students of color earnestly telling you how they see this as a method of credentializing (climbing up) while giving back to individuals/communities who lack the access they’ve been given (reaching back), I’m not mad at it one bit. I’m thinking of “Of The Meaning of Progress” in The Souls of Black Folk and the mural in the X-Lounge at Columbia and Michelle Obama’s 2012 Convention speech as I enthusiastically agree to support and endorse their decision to teach (for) America.
