do you have recs for more books like girls made of snow and glass? its such an underrated Fave
it IS! it’s the BEST
I know I recommend the Queen’s Thief series too often but here we go again because Mina and Attolia Irene are characters who share that special place in my heart for fictional queens who are so strong and smart but think they don’t deserve love even though they DO!! They are cold and regal and sometimes cruel but they FEEL, and they LOVE, and they DESERVE THE WORLD! The Thief may not obviously connect to Girls Made of Snow but the sequel, Queen of Attolia, so does, and the whole series is wonderful and worth it. Its only flaw is not being canonically gay 😔 no one’s perfect
For more gorgeous writing and feminist fairy tale retellings, some of them queer, you must read Leigh Bardugo’s The Language of Thorns if you haven’t yet! Back when I first read Girls Made of Snow in 2017, it connected with Language of Thorns so well that I wrote a whole long post about them and queer retellings, which stuck with me so well that I ended up writing a paper analyzing Girls Made of Snow for a class about fairy tales last semester! My verdict: queer retellings are literally the best
If you’re in the market for more wlw fantasy (and who isn’t?), there’s Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst. I have to say its worldbuilding is clunkier and its relationships less finely drawn than Girl Made of Snow, but it was one of the very first f/f fantasy books I ever read and it holds a special place in my heart. Also, so romantic.
Also for wlw fantasy novels, Ash by Malinda Lo! As soon as I finished it I started recommending it for fans of GMoSaG. It’s slow and gentle and gay and well-written — and you totally need a Cinderella retelling to pair with your Snow White retelling!
But if that Cinderella retelling doesn’t float your boat, try Mechanica by Betsey Cornwell, a more steampunky version that gets queerer in its sequel, or the upcoming Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron for more girls kissing girls and smashing the patriarchy
