Fighting for the long term
When it comes to charities most people choose charities that assist in human welfare. e.g. food, shelter, water. Which I think is great! However there is also the problem that there are only a very limited amount of resources, and we need to find a way to spend these resources effectively.
One of the greatest challenges that we, as a human race, are currently fighting is an existential one. Specifically climate change. Why existential? The effects of climate change may not be as drastic as, say, The Day After Tomorrow…yet Of course, such an event could potentially happen if we let it happen. A world where major natural disasters occur in every month of every year in every major city sounds sucky. We won’t have the resources to sustain our lifestyles, let alone ourselves. it’s pretty obvious that by this point, technological innovation would be the last thing on our minds.
And that’s the problem. Humans are currently living in such unsustainable ways that future generations will essentially be forced to live under an agricultural societal mentality as opposed to a technological innovative civilization. People who’ve seen Interstellar know what I’m talking about. Basically, we’re going to be a species forever stuck on Planet Earth. If an asteroid comes hurtling towards us, where done for. Becoming an interplanetary species sounds science fiction-y but it is also vital for our long term future. People like Elon Musk are already working on it. But we don’t have a lot of time left.
That is why I pick Conservation International as my chosen charity.
