It would stay their secret then.
A secret for the Durants, for the first time in Arkhelios history.
Tabitha wasn’t sure she liked the feeling. It felt dangerous. In Arkhelios, a secret could burn through a family line like wildfire if the wrong person knew it. But it wasn’t her secret to keep. It was her daughter’s. And Ulyssa had made it astoundingly clear that she wished for no one, not even the father, to know of this secret. She had refused to even tell them who he was, though Tabitha had a sneaking suspicion as to why, and who.
She wished her daughter cared more about the entire situation. As soon as Ulyssa had clued them into the situation, Tabitha had expected the response her daughter had had; even understood it. Her daughter was far too young for the ‘burden’ she carried at the moment. The child was better off with someone who wanted them. But as soon as she had comforted Ulyssa, as soon as she’d told her she’d help her handle the situation, Tabitha had watched her daughter wash her hands clean of the situation. It was as if it wasn’t happening anymore. No longer her problem, suddenly it was ‘out of sight, out of mind’.
She wasn’t entirely sure this was a normal reaction. Though, she supposed quietly, it would be easier to keep such a secret, if her daughter was intent on pretending it didn’t exist in the first place.
