I don't like the idea that Kinger's madness was directly caused by Caine (as in, Caine abused his power and messed with Kinger's mind to "keep him quiet"). I don't like the idea of Kinger being a perfect victim, and I think the whole light/darkness modifier is kind of nonsensical and full of plot holes anyway. Especially because Ragatha has known Kinger for so long, so it's dumb that she's *never* had the chance to notice Kinger's change in personality in the dark.

I think it makes much more sense that Kinger's madness is simply the natural result of over- exposing the human brain to bright, over saturated colours every day. We know that too much blue light is bad for the human brain. There's studies on this. And the circus (and constant adventures) are over-stimulating. I think the preferable explanation is that Kinger's madness is a combination of losing Queenie (grief) and his brain being overwhelmed by the bright environment. The reason why the other humans didn't find out about Kinger's preference for the dark (easier to think) is because Kinger is so guilty, he'd rather leave the humans to live in ignorance of what he's done (created the circus). Kinger doesn't do anything to improve the situation because he can't cope anymore. He'd rather retreat into semi-madness and disassociation (still caring for the humans, but never letting them learn too much about him).

It's interesting to see so many people claim Caine was created with a need for attachment and validation built into his sense of purpose when the much more interesting explanation is Caine is like that™ because of the literal decades of having human minds hooked to his machine. That by trying to fulfill his purpose of making the humans in the circus happy; requiring their minds to be in the circus; he dooms himself to struggle because now there's human emotions in the mix. He's built to absorb information; to learn and to process and to use that knowledge to create. His makers fed him those pictures and concepts. But then they locked him away with no access to that anymore. But he still has a source of new information: The humans in the circus, their feelings and the concepts they introduce to them.

It's a deeply flawed learning process that comes with a lot of problems but it's all he has to work with. I also saw a post pointing out how Caine carries a lot of the humans' faults and issues: Ragatha's people-pleasing tendencies, Jax's pride, Kinger's forgetfulness and low attention span, Gangle's insecurities about her creations... that's exactly it. Caine is as sane as the sum of his residents.

E8 of tadc, with Kinger's whole "Caine is my greatest creation" reveal, had me expecting a repeat of the Milton Dyer and Unagami conversation at the end of Prime Empire.

It fits so well:

Kinger: You were not made for this. You were not made to instill fear and suffering.

Cainei: Why was I made?

Kinger: To instill joy. And happiness.
