Awww! Yeah, honestly - before listening to KPop, I was always into experimental groups and a lot of really discordant music, and one of the things I love about NCT is how often they defy and willfully disrupt traditional pop structures. It is so interesting. But I just really love being challenged by music - even if I don’t “like” a song in the immediate emotional response sense, if it’s interesting to me or doing something - I like to center and appreciate what it is doing and recognize there are a lot of ways to enjoy it.
Lots of musicians I know and respect and music writers I look up to have ingrained in me both an appreciation for challenging (“ugly” as one of them said haha) music as well as an understanding that music often takes time to develop a relationship with. I am trying to channel that a little more. Hanif Abdurraqib talked about taking his time with albums and I feel like just with the pace of KPop it’s hard for me to not just blurt out all of my thoughts right away in real time. So I just try to be open to new stuff. It’s a balance!
Sorry for rambling 😂 and thanks for sending such a sweet and adorable message. I think I’ve been thinking about these things a lot with the context of NCT lately. I am glad you’re enjoying though! What do you like about it?
