Where’s Kapn Kate (Ten Years Later)
It’s apparently the fortieth anniversary of the beginning of the British Indie charts, or the time when they began fiddling the mainstream charts to ensure all those upstart punk bands on indie labels no longer appeared on Top of the Pops to upset the blue rinse brigade, and as a sop gave them their own little chart so they wouldn’t feel picked on.
(At least until Pete Waterman began stretching the concept of ‘indie’ so all his crappy pop acts such as Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Rick Astley, etc. clogged it up, majors such as EMI copied with their own fake indie labels for placements and the whole chart became an irrelevence)
Who was that first Number One?
Spizzenergi’s ‘Where’s Captain Kirk’ (later covered very badly by REM, we’re sad to say. They did many good covers, but that was not one of them)
Ten years ago we made a joke post about the abrupt vanishing of up until then one of the most regular posters on Boolprop Fight The Addiction False - Kapn Kate. There was another Taffer there called Sporks, so kind of obvious filk song to do.
Even back then we were easily amused.
How much have things changed in ten years? Sporks at Boolprop FTAF is now Chelsea (or Chel-see) and one of the moderators of the Taffers, but there’s still no sign of Kapn Kate.
(We were never quite sure whether KapnKate was meant to be short for Captain Kate or a pun on ‘Cap and Cape’, by the way, but no one ever corrected us, so short for Captain Kate it remained for us)
