I already drew Tahu Nuva before, but he was my first favorite BIONICLE character, and I was inspired to draw him again with the Mask of Time after listening to an Alternate version of the Final Battle of BIONICLE. Much to my and many fan's disappointment BIONICLE went out with a whimper instead of a Bang. They had the longest run of any original Lego Theme at the time and BIONICLE actually saved Lego form going Bankrupt in the early 2000s, but by the 2010's they were not selling like they used to. There were a multitude of reasons: Prices were inflating for sets, Old fans were becoming Teenagers, the story was becoming complex and harder to follow with no one easy way to access it as it was spread across multi-media and different writing teams, and they had attempted a soft reboot of the series to bring in new fans but it was not as effective as when they first launched and alienated older fans, so the BIONICLE team was told to wrap it up, and the ending was rushed with one last set of series stars called BIONICLE STARS, where each set had a piece of Deus Ex Machina Golden Armor for Tahu which makes him able to tear through the army of Rahkshi and absorb their power... Aside from this being a Deus Ex Machina it also makes no sense in the lore. They say the Great Beings created this armor specifically for Tahu in case of the event that the Makuta ever turned evil... First of all the Main Flaw of the Great Beings for all their genius and grandeur, is that they have never thought through any of their actions. They put the Antidermis which the Makuta were created from onboard the Great Spirit Robot because they had no idea what it was or what to do with it so they left it up to the Robot's AI Mata Nui to decided what to do with it. They NEVER would have come up with a contingency for the Makuta and for THOUSANDS of years the Makuta were not Evil. Secondly, Tahu is a Leader, not a Chosen one. There is no reason he should be the special Chosen one, decided before he was even created. Thirdly, it was just an anticlimactic way for the Main Villain of the entire series, Makuta Teridax to be defeated. He gets distracted by Tahu killing all of his minions long enough that Mata Nui can drop a Moon on his head...The Schemer of 1000 plans that usurped God and became him...got distracted in the middle of a fight and hit in the head with a really big rock...That's just not a fitting way to end one of the most important characters of the series, and despite the ending they gave him still one of my All Time Favorite Villain Characters in media.

I saw somebody come up with an alternate ending that felt like it was RIGHT THERE if they hadn't been rushed. It ties everything together, and gives Tahu the spotlight without a Deus Ex Machina or making him The Chosen One. Picture this: The Final Battle is raging on the surface of Bara Magna between the Continent Size Great Spirit Robot controlled by Makuta Teridax and his army fighting the rebuilt and slightly shorter Prototype Robot controlled my Mata Nui and the allied forces of the Matoran Universe and inhabitants of Bara Magna. Tahu Nuva, formerly the hot headed leader of the Toa Mata, now grown over his journey into the Leader of the entire Allied forces. He looks upon the chaos going on. Mata Nui is fighting out here but the Prototype is just not as powerful as the Great Spirit Robot and becoming unstable. He needs to do something, if only he had more Time... Earlier during the battle of Metru Nui, the Dark Hunter Voporak showed up and stole the Mask of Time, then ran off to who knows where with it. Luckily however they have a spare curtesy of Takanuva and a malfunctioning Mask of dimensional gates. (Takanuva stole a Mask of time in an Alternate Universe where the Toa had become an authoritarian empire). Takanuva hands it over to Tahu since Tahu is the only Toa still around with experience using the Mask of Time, but before he did not have the power or concentration to control the mask's immense power, he was only able to slow the Bohrok Kal down long enough for Gali to come up with a better plan. Back then Vakama told him that the Mask of Time was only to be used in dire circumstances, and there was no situation that could ever be more dire than THIS one right now. Tahu was once entirely and foolishly unafraid to die, now he has fear but not of dying. He very well might kill himself trying to do this, but his biggest fear is the regret he would have of doing nothing, and if he can by Mata Nui enough time to win then his life would be a worthy sacrifice. Tahu channels all of his power and concentration into the Mask of Time and manages to do the impossible, He Slows down the entire Great Spirit Robot to a snail's crawl. Teridax never thought a being lesser than him could ever even hope to control the Mask of Time, a mask that HE commissioned the creation of and now that scheme is coming back around to bite him while Mata Nui expends the rest of his own power to drop a moon on Teridax's head and for all his genius, and power, and endless schemes he can try to think of 1000 ways out of this scenario in the eternity it feels like he has before his death, but he is already out of time to enact any of them!

Tahu is the hot-headed but selfless Toa Mata of Fire and leader of the Toa team tasked with awakening the Great Spirit Mata Nui. After being exposed to energized protodermis, he was transformed into a Toa Nuva. He was eventually reverted back to his original form by the Kanohi Ignika.

Toa Nuva Gali
