Bionicle, Twilight Break - Chapter 30: "Eye of the Storm"

Upon finally reaching their new home, the kra-matoran quickly get to work. The toa set to their own tasks as well, moving fast to make use of what little time they have left before this moment of peace comes to an end. Both Ahkmou and Gavla find the calm disquieting, however, and being free of the storm that has been their life recently means now the storms in their minds will make themselves known.

Takutanuva is such a fascinating concept, but man he is weird.

He's around for an extremely short time, and while he has the very impactful revival of Jaller in his corner, the fact that Takanuva gets brought back from the dead two minutes later by means of some completely unexplained nonsense dents that a bit. His only other contribution is opening the gate, which could've been achieved several ways, including not having a gate at all and making Makuta the only obstacle to getting back to Metru Nui.

His characterisation is also a mess because it's so heavily tied to Bob Thompson's version of Makuta. Bob's Makuta is more misguided than pure evil, and merging with Takanuva gives him clarity, represented by the grime and dirt being cleaned off of his armour. He realises that Mata Nui needs to be awakened and they use their merged strength to open the way back to Metru Nui.

Except Bob's Makuta disappears after 2004. Greg's version is characterised very differently, to the extent that Makuta's role feels almost absent, and you just have to kinda conclude that Terry was thinking "Yeah okay, Mata Nui's probably dying by now, time to let 'em back into the robot to save him" and relied on his labyrinthine mind to conceal that from Takanuva.

He's very much a "We're selling a boxed set of the Takanuva/Makuta combo model so we gotta make it important" character, a habit that I'm glad they kicked by 2005 and they didn't cram Voporak into Web of Shadows.

Hot Take: Takanuva should've gotten the Golden Armor and it would've fixed so many things

Ok so we all know the Golden Armor was a last minute asspull deus ex machina, but considering all the Bionicle team had to go through just to get Lego have a final arc to the series, I'm willing to forgive it being kinda rushed and out of nowhere.

But even with that, the fact that it was Tahu who got it lowkey rubbed me the wrong way. I dislike that he had to be transformed back to a Toa Mata and I dislike that he has this extra, unique destiny because it really isolates him from the rest of his team. They're supposed to be equals, six heroes one destiny!

But Takanuva having an extra special destiny DOES work! He's the extra special 7th Toa! Greg spent nearly the entire second half of Bionicle hinting that Takanuva was going to have a mysterious special destiny, but never actually got around to writing it. Supposedly he was going to have him play a pivotal role in resolving the planned Great Being Civil War arc in the post-ending serials, but those got cancelled. But this would've been a perfectly fine destiny for him to have!

Plus his color scheme was already gold! He changed it to white to hide during Makuta's reign and because they needed a white set for the Stars wave, and you can have him return to gold by retrieving the Golden Armor, visibly reclaiming his identity after having to hide it (which fits with his arc for VERY obvious reasons).

Takanuva getting the Golden Armor also fits SO well thematically with his character arc relating to Makuta. Ever since he became a Toa, the narrative was obsessed with relating him to Makuta and giving him an arc related to moral ambiguity. He temporarily fused with Teridax to become Takutanuva. Christian Faber even said in concept art that the two of them were always meant to fit into each other like a lock and key to ultimately awaken Mata Nui. And of course later he became a Toa of Light and Shadow, again making him like a mix of Toa and Makuta. And the recurring theme in his journey through the multiverse was deconstructing his views on black and white morality.

If Takanuva used the Golden Armor, he would absorb all the Kraata powers from the Rahkshi, which Greg later implied was all 42 powers. Thus, Golden Armor Takanuva would be a finalized incarnation of the fusion of Toa and Makuta, but now fully under his own control.

It's actually crazy how much more thematically resonant the ending would've been with just this small change. All the other rushing makes sense, but this is something they could've done! And I know the Doyalist reason Tahu got it is because Stars was meant to be a nostalgia line-up of sets and Tahu was the poster boy for Bionicle, but honestly Takanuva had arguably a stronger argument for being the main character!

Takanuva Facts

Just a list for no reason whatsoever. Interpret as you will.

According to lore, long before the Toa Mata lost their memory and Takua had his wiped a thousand times, Takua was most drawn to Toa Gali and was awestruck by her.

Despite being hidden as a Ta-Matoran, Takua wore an ill-fitting medium-blue Pakari. No other Matoran or Toa of Fire in the entire series have blue as a part of their color scheme.

Takua never really fit in in Ta-Matoran society and was never able to fully conform to Ta-Matoran mannerisms or values. He was considered bizarre in Ta-Metru, and became an outcast in Ta-Koro.

When cast out of Ta-Koro, Takua finally found community for himself among the other members of the island who were considered abnormal or pariahs.

During the time after the Toa Mata arrived on Mata Nui, the Toa that Takua bonded with the most, and even forged a psychic link with, was Gali.

After the Bohrok invasion, when the Matoran were rebuilt into larger, stronger forms, Takua chose to replace his yellow with blue for reasons never stated, making his color scheme now mostly variations of blue with only a red torso and arms.

Takua having multiple blues in his color scheme isn't just abnormal because it's not an established Fire color, but rather because almost every kind of Matoran with heavy amounts of blue in their color scheme is exclusively female (Water, Lightning, Psionics).

Takua spends the majority of the Mask of Light movie chasing an ideal person whom he is convinced must be someone else, and when faced with repeated signs of who he truly is, ignores and hides from them until it's almost too late and his loved ones are pushed away and hurt by his avoidance.

Unlike all other Toa transformations seen in the series, Takua is only ever able to take action to physically change into who he was meant to be once he finally accepts who he is and who he is meant to become.

Also unlike all other Toa in the series, Takanuva is the only Toa to change their name upon self-actualizing into a Toa. Matoran change their names slightly at times throughout their lives, but Takanuva's name change is the only one known to directly tied to a change in body, presentation, and social identity.

Upon confronting the main antagonist of the series, Makuta Teridax, the Makuta immediately demeans and belittles the newly transformed and renamed Takanuva by reducing him to his past identity as Takua.

The canonical explanation for the form a Matoran will take upon becoming a Toa is that they will take on the form of what they consider an ideal hero. For the Toa Metru, that was Toa Lhikan. Takanuva is stated to have taken on the form of a Toa Nuva, but every member of the team had somewhat unique builds; Takanuva's build is the exact same as Gali Nuva's.

Later in the series, we learned Takua was never even a Ta-Matoran to begin with, but actually an Av-Matoran, and was simply made to think he was something he never was while constantly failing to perform that role.

Takua was meant to be an audience surrogate character for MNOG, QftT, the Bohrok animations, and Mask of Light, and did a fantastic job at that.

Unrelated, but a disproportionately large chunk of that audience has since grown up and transitioned into women, many of whom idolize or once idolized Gali. Funny, that.

Takanuva literally sparkles when they walk and wields not only deadly lasers but the literal power of friendship and empathy idk what else to say about that lmao. Do I have to spell it out?
