TaiLin Headcanons

Tai has stood up to Toph. He’s gotten into arguments with her about how she has treated Lin and how she continues to treat Lin. The first time he did it, people in the room thought for sure Toph was going to bend him into the ground, but she didn’t. Toph will never admit it but she respects Tai Jun. she respects his skill with stone but she also respects the fact that he will not back down and isn’t afraid of her.

Toph and Lin’s relationship improved after Tai Jun began dating Lin.

Tai’s daughter and grandchildren call Toph “Old Granny” and she thinks it’s hilarious. She said it’s an appropriate name for her wrinkled old self.

Toph is always getting Lin’s step-grandchildren into mischief.

Toph visits Republic City far more now that her eldest daughter is married and has a family she can corrupt.

Headcanon

A conversation headcanon that I had.

“You need to make decisions based on what you want. Don’t make the same mistakes I did.”

The advice she had given to Opal all those years before had echoed in Lin’s mind several times over in the months since Kuvira’s attack.  Was the life she had what she really wanted? Or was it just what she was used to? The late nights and long days, the annoying politics of it all. The job felt like an old coat that no longer fit and Lin was no longer sure if she even wanted it to. So it was no surprise to her when a few months after her marriage to Tai Jun that she blurted out over dinner:

“I'm thinking it's time to retire.”

Tai nearly dropped his chopsticks, shock evident on his face. “Lin? Are you sure? You've never said anything about retiring before.”

“No, but I've been thinking about it. A lot in fact.” She sighed and reached across the table for Tai’s hand, caressing his knuckles with her thumb. “Before you and our families came into my life, I thought the my career was enough. I thought pleasing my mother was enough. Tenzin breaking up with me and marrying Pema meant that the only thing I had left was being Chief of Police.”

“Lin…”

“And now look at all I have. I love you so much and there's family now. I'm only fifty five and I have a lot of good years left. We both do. I want to see what else life has in store for me other than crime and politics and coming home so tired we can barely hold a conversation. My mother let being Chief of Police pretty much destroy our family, it got Jung Li, Mom’s replacement, killed. I want to leave on good terms and while I am still breathing.”

Headcanon

Lin and Tai Jun started dating about two months before Korra arrives and the equalists become a real threat. They break up right before the attack on Air Temple Island because Tai wants her to be careful and Lin shoots back that it is her duty to protect the city, the Avatar, and the Airbenders.  He tells her he knows she is capable, he just wants her to remember that people care about her too.  Lin lashes out that maybe he should stop caring and that she has never needed anyone before.  He tells her she is being ridiculous and she tells him they are over.  (or roughly something like that)

Lin is captured and her bending is taken away.  Tai and his family are in hiding outside the city because Equalists made threats against him and those who sympathize with the benders.  He hears over the radio that Lin has been captured and her bending removed.  He immediately begins making ready to head back to the city to find Lin.  His daughter and son-in-law object, but he is determined.

Tai returns back to the city to find his gallery and studio in shambles and no sign of Lin.  The equalists have been defeated and the city is in chaos. Kya, unaware of their breakup, manages to get a message through to him via General Iroh’s troops that are now patrolling the city that Lin is with Korra and Tenzin and heading down to the south pole.  He messages his daughter to let her know he is fine and he is heading down there.  

He arrives and meets up with Kya who tells him that her mother has not found a way to restore bending to either Korra or Lin.  He is furious when he learns that most of the attention has been focused on Korra and heads off to Lin’s guest quarters.  

Lin is shocked to see him when she opens the door and he holds her close and tells her she won’t be alone or forgotten again and that he loves her.  She is so overwhelmed by all that has gone on, she can’t really say anything other than she is sorry for what happened between them and that she loves him too.  He tells her no matter what she is strong and she will get through it and she will have him by her side.
