The new Roku novel revealed that Sozin wasn't even his daddy's favorite kid, Taiso thought Sozin was inept and annoying. Taiso regarded Zeisan as smarter, more capable, and his favorite and was genuinely upset that the only one with bending was the one that sucked.

That said, Taiso himself decided that Zeisan being a nonbender took her out of the running for heir to the throne despite her apparent brilliance, I'm not saying he was a good dad, he sucked (and I'm amused that Zeisan told her dad to go huff volcanic ash, go off Queen).

Just the fact that Sozin was the least favorite kid was sort of unexpected for me. I knew Sozin was giving Zuko vibes in the first book and the second book confirms, Zuko is way more like Sozin than he is like Roku, personality-wise and narrative-wise.

Fascinated by the fact that Azulon had a soft spot for Iroh.

I mean, it's not surprising or anything, literally every parent in the Fire Nation Royal line plays favorites. Taiso's favored Sozin, Ozai favored Azula, Ursa favored Zuko. It's literally tradition. Iroh only had one bio kid (on the record) but he still ended up playing favorites in the end.

I theorize that Izumi plays favorites too, and that her favorite is Iroh Jr. I mean, the vast majority of people aren't even aware Izumi has a daughter, are they?
