all goblins and fairies have a coming-of-age ceremony that signifies their full acceptance into adult society, and one of the first things marianne wants to do to pave the way for any future cohabitation with bog in the dark forest (they won’t even tell her what the marriage rituals are yet) is to go through the ceremony herself.
it requires a lot of preparation and involves decorative war scars (she loops stripes across her upper arms; bog’s are across his cheeks), trials by combat (bog insists on being her opponent), and feasting on bloody, pumping hearts. by the end of it, bog is more in love with her than ever, and marianne is officially considered a goblin by everyone in the kingdom.
and then bog decides he wants to do the fairy initiation.
and it’s all fine dining etiquette, formal ballroom dancing, a demonstrated proficiency in the book of law, and a talent show portion. just hearing about it and he’s near-mortified.
it takes him six months to prepare and he only barely passes, but marianne got to see him singing queen while walking on a tightrope, she’s set for life.
the fact that now wellington is used to describe a poorly functioning camera is like so ridiculous.
