Musical Monday

1960 was the year of a Best Musical tie, giving the accolade to The Sound of Music and the Pulitzer-winning Fiorello!; leaving three other musicals in the dust! Once Upon a Mattress has been featured on the blog already, and Gypsy will be featured at a later date for a very specific reason. So, we're left with one musical, and this is the week for it to shine. Happy Musical Monday!

Musical: Take Me Along

Book, Music, and Lyrics: Joseph Stein and Robert Russell, Bob Merrill, and Bob Merrill

Broadway Run: ORIGINAL CAST= October 22, 1959 - December 17, 1960

                          REVIVAL CAST= April 14, 1985

Awards Won: ORIGINAL CAST= Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical (Jackie Gleason)

                       REVIVAL CAST= None

Other: Take Me Along is based on Eugene O'Neil's book, Ah, Wilderness!

Fun Fact: Take Me Along was Jackie Gleason's last Broadway production, and sole Tony nomination/win.

Whether or not producers will gamble on reviving Take Me Along again is up to the Gods of Theatre; but for now, it lives on in its cast recording and sparse regional productions. This has been your one-night stand in 1960, but we will return in the late/middle of May for some Gypsy action. Until then, happy musical watching, listening, and enjoying. Go see a show!
