BODY BAGS by Jason Pearson was one of the comics I read early enough in my foray into comics that it left a permanent impression. Much like THE CROW by James O'Barr, the art and story were, to me, contagiously visceral, demonstrating the unique power and potential of the creative and artistic medium I would soon dedicate my life to. When I started writing TALES OF MR. RHEE I envisioned each volume featuring cover art by a different horror comic artist whose work I admired and/or was an influence on me. I then made a list of such artists... and included @jsin70 on it. While he only rarely dabbled in traditional horror comics, I knew I wanted to see if I could collaborate with him one day. I reached out to him about this in preparation for TALES OF MR. RHEE Volume 3: "Those Who Fight Monsters...", the first volume of the series that embraced a true "anthology" approach to the story-arc. Given the wide specrtum of artists featured in that volume, Jason was the perfect fit: This volume wasn't your typical horror story... and Jason wasn't your typical horror artist. I knew Jason was a sometimes cripplingly intense perfectionist, but I still was not prepared for the level of respect, passion, and discipline he put into his craft. He asked for tons of references, and we'd then have long conversations -- both virtually and on the phone -- about Mr. Rhee as a character and what the cover should say. That last point was especially important to Jason in all his art: Every image had to SAY SOMETHING. After much discussion he provided me two options for the cover, both thumbnails which I'm sharing here for the first time: One based on my image for the cover, and a second one he drafted from scratch as a wrap-around piece. He then quipped "Choose wisely." I hope I did. Jason, like many of us, battled his own demons... and this -- and his unstoppable drive -- often led him into battles he probably didn't need to engage in with peers and the public alike. My hope is that it will not tarnish his legacy.
