I just realized tumblr never uploaded this. I got beeper some talking buttons. I need to modify them somehow to make them easier to use. Right now I have to lure them into pressing it with their feet.
The eventual goal is for a button that says curse words lol
But, I am of the mind that a dog is a living, thinking creature I choose share my home with, so it is my responsibility to make sure they are able to safely navigate the fucked up things Humans have done to the planet so he can have a safe and happy life.
By this logic, dog needs to understand autonomy and consent or he's gonna be anxious about his own personal space, consider Small Dogs with zero autonomy who are anxious and snappy because they just get air-jailed rather than trained. Consent to be touched is not a human specific thing!! So I started early with the 'I'm gonna pet you, stop, then see if you come to me for more attention or not' trick of checking to see if your dog actually wants to be pet.
So by 6 months old I have managed to raise a dog who understands "I want that" vs "I don't want that" and TRUSTS I will listen to him telling me "I don't want that". Then I gave him talking buttons. Now he can want other things than being pet. Dad gets him a treat,, or at least my attention; Playtime gets him a toy; Water refills his dish; Outside gets him out in the yard. He only started with six.
He's had the buttons for three days.........
It's pouring rain, you've just been out, no we're not going again. We can go when the rain stops.
The rain stops...
Cedar: "Outside Water Playtime"
We've never combined words before... This is his first actual sentence.
"Are.... You asking to go to the beach?" Cedar books it to the door. Beach wasn't a word we used for him. We'd always ask if he wanted to play in the water.
So the buttons are obviously working... Lets give him more? Yeah that's a great plan! Lets teach the dog yes and no...
Grandpa puts the TV on... Cedar: NO NO NO NO NO
I ask if he wants to do XYorZ.... Cedar: YES!
So I taught my dog that his body and his space are his own, that he can have opinions about things. He learned to be inquisitive, he wants to be involved and know what people are doing!
Fast-forward another... year and a half? He's 3 now. My spouse and I got some treats from the local Wildlife Rescue Center, and they came with little pendants and a chain to put them on. Cedar was nosey as always, just insisted on being involved. When he does this we usually put whatever we're handling on him just so he can experience it. So my spouse put the chain on him...
Sorry, by 'chain' I mean the...
BALL CHAIN necklace...
Just a silver string of beads. And we all looked at him and went "why does that suit you?" And it does!!! Uncomfortably so! He doesn't wear a collar in the house, so we put his contact tag on the necklace as a pendant. Now he walks around like this:
look at how fucking smug he looks....
And he gets SO upset if you try to take it off him. He doesn't mind me adjusting it, but as soon as I try to take it past his ears he moves away from me. When we do take it off him he gets really insistent that he wants it back.
It's the dawn of the third day....
I've accepted that if he wants it off he will come ask.
I taught my dog to tell me no... Now he wears jewelry...
December 18&19&20 || Luna hoarded 3 toys on the couch and buried her face in the couch cushions as if trying to make a place to hide them from her brothers. Our buttons came in and we’re definitely getting more. We’re using them more than the dogs, unfortunately. Luna slept with her arm up on the coffee table since she likes to be a little squished. It’s comforting to her, it seems.
I want to find and read a fic where Damian gets Alfred the cat some of those buttons that talk. You know, the ones that each button is a different word? And the cat 'communicates' through them?
I don't know what else could happen. I just want to see the wholesomeness or chaos or humor that could happen from it. :3
(Ooh! Alfred the cat could 'talk' to Alfred the human! ^_^)
Monty’s talking buttons arrived today! Now I just need to get him to use them. It took about 20 minutes of “target training” to get him to push the button. Then I actually programmed the button to say “Hit it” so that the command was reinforced and to try and help make the connection between what I was saying and what he was doing. It was then that I knew we could never have a button that says “Treat”. Once he realized that I gave him a treat when the button said “Hit it”, he started spamming the button without being given the command.
Now I have a button near the door which says “Outside” and one near the couch that says “Play”. Following advice I’d seen on Bunny’s videos, I am modeling with the buttons. Before we went out for his walk, I pressed the “Outside” button. I convinced Monty to hit the “Play” button before playing with him. We’ll see how long it takes for him to make the association and begin pressing the buttons independently.
Something positive: While I did laundry, Ashley very decidedly pressed MOMMY. A few days later while I made dinner, Cooper curiously pressed BEDTIME. Still learning. Just now Ashley pressed BEDTIME but then realized her mistake and pressed TREAT instead.
Omg she saw my dad packing his lunch for work and she pressed BYE-BYE. He presses it when he leaves. Then she turned around and said TREAT again.
